About The Position

The Operating Room Assistant (Per Diem) plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the operating room. This position requires a thorough understanding of OR equipment, strict adherence to safety and infection control protocols, and the ability to work effectively as part of a surgical team. Responsibilities include managing and maintaining OR equipment, preparing rooms for procedures, assisting with patient care and transfers, and ensuring all areas are clean, organized, and stocked.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • One year of hospital experience.
  • Able to function independently in a high-stress, fast-paced, critical care area.
  • Must be able to assist with lifting patients, moving equipment, and disposing of trash and linens.

Nice To Haves

  • Comprehensive knowledge of aseptic technique and principles preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of all OR beds, tables, and attachments.
  • Ensure proper working conditions of equipment prior to patient care, securely tightening and/or locking beds, attachments, and headpieces before patient care and transfers.
  • Deliver and return appropriate equipment to each operating room, including stirrups, suction machines, towers, step stools, and positioning aides.
  • Assist in the care, handling, and transport of delicate and sophisticated equipment such as microscopes and specialty equipment.
  • Clean all equipment and cords before returning them to designated locations.
  • Change linens on patient beds and stretchers to prepare them for patient transfer.
  • Verify that all oxygen tanks are full and on the stretcher at the time of transfer.
  • Maintain patient safety by ensuring beds and stretchers remain locked during patient transfer and that bed rails are always up.
  • Adhere to safety blood/body fluid policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Infection Prevention Standards and cleaning procedures for patient and staff safety.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective attire for the task being performed.
  • Assist with room cleaning and turnover as assigned or directed.
  • Demonstrate and adhere to the proper sequence and cleaning procedures between surgical cases.
  • Assist with patient positioning, lifting, and transfer. May assist with skin prep by elevating upper or lower extremities under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Restock and maintain sub-sterile rooms, utility rooms, equipment rooms, and supply areas.
  • Demonstrate initiative to keep these areas clean, orderly, and free from trash and clutter.
  • Assist the RN in restocking OR room cabinets per par levels.
  • Work effectively with other staff as a member of the surgical team.
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritize tasks according to urgency.
  • Exhibit the ability to multitask.
  • Assist in the orientation of other personnel to the department under the direction of the supervisor or Registered Nurse.
  • Perform other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her supervisor.
  • Pick cases for add-ons and next-day surgery.
  • Transport specimens to the lab or pathology.
  • Perform room setups.
