Operating Room Assistant - Ambulatory Surgical Center
About The Position
The OR Assistant functions as a member of the Nursing Service Department by performing specified procedures according to hospital policies. This role is within New England Baptist Hospital’s state-of-the-art outpatient surgical center, a high-performing facility specializing in same-day surgical care. The center features four fully equipped operating rooms and is designed to support high-volume procedures with an emphasis on safety, efficiency, and exceptional patient experience. Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Heart Saver certification required within 60 days of hire date from American Heart Association or Red Cross
- 0-1 year of experience

Responsibilities
- Assists in positioning and transferring of adolescent/adult/geriatric patients.
- Assists in positioning of patients for surgical procedures.
- Holds extremity(ies) for skin prep.
- Delivers PACU stretchers/patient beds to room upon request from primary/associate nurse.
- Assists in transferring the patients from the OR table to the PACU or patient's bed and assists in transferring patients to PACU when necessary.
- Responsible for prompt cleaning of the room between cases: Disposes of soiled linen and replaces with clean laundry bag. Disposes of trash and re-lines buckets with plastic liners. Mops floor with a clean mop and disinfectant solution (after every case). Empties suction canisters in hopper near the decontamination room and discards them in a biohazard trash bag. Replaces clean suction canisters and tubing at each suction regulator in the OR. Washes and re-makes OR bed and/or stretcher. Wipes all surfaces that have been contaminated by blood, body fluid or other contaminants.
- Responsible for checking the OR bed or positioning devices for proper attachments.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of all tables and positioning devices and attachments.
- Wipes all positioning equipment and bed attachments prior to putting away.
- Demonstrates initiative to put away extra equipment when not in use.
- Adheres to standard and resistant organism precautions: Wears personal protective attire appropriate for task being performed (i.e., gown, goggles, gloves).
- Promptly observes for and attends to blood or body fluid spills.
- Works effectively with other staff as a member of the surgical team: Responds to intercom calls in a timely manner.
- Assumes responsibility for prompt room turnover times.
- Complies with on-call responsibilities. Responds within 30 minutes when on-call (unless another time frame is established by the Nursing Coordinator).
- Assists staff in the PACU or other Surgical Services unit(s), as necessary
- Plans time away from work appropriately
- Arrives and leaves at designated times.
- Uses unplanned earned time appropriately.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Attends annual safety review
