About The Position

The Operating Engineer ensures the safe and efficient operation of industrial- and commercial-grade machinery and equipment on campus facilities. Such machinery includes, but is not limited to, furnaces and boilers, heating and air conditioning regulating units, and water supply lines. In addition to monitoring equipment operations, the operating engineer is responsible for performing routine and ad hoc maintenance activities with and without support from third-party contractors and service providers.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years’ maintenance or facilities experience.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent technical training.
  • Philadelphia Stationary Engineer License

Responsibilities

  • Lights gas and oil fed burners.
  • Observes pressure, temperature, and draft meters on panel to verify specified operation of automatic combustion control systems, feed water regulators, burners, chiller equipment and air handling units.
  • Observes boiler and air handling units to detect malfunctions and makes repairs, such as changing burners, tightening pipes, fittings, pump repairs, filter changes and punching tubes.
  • Turns valves and adjusts controls to set specified fuel feed, draft openings, water level, steam pressure of boiler, proper operation of chillers, absorption systems and desired water temperatures.
  • Tests boiler feed water and maintains chemical treatment equipment to heating and cooling waters.
  • Maintains log of meter and gauge readings and records data such as water test results and quantity of fuel consumed.
  • Cleans and repairs absorbers, micro turbines and propane blender, blow down to discharge sediment; regulates feed water and condensation pumps and lubricates pump equipment.
  • Carries pager and portable radio during shift and responds to emergency situations on campus.
  • Assists other department employees in project completion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
