About The Position

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is seeking outstanding applicants for a tenure-line position in African American Studies. Requirements

• Hold a Ph.D. in Africana/Black Studies or a closely related field by the position start date of August 2027.
• Experience teaching lower- and upper-division courses in African American Studies.
• Ability to offer courses that would readily fit into the African American Studies curriculum.
• Experience in or demonstrated capacity for departmental leadership, academic programming, and curriculum development.
• Experience in mentorship of faculty colleagues and students.
• Maintain an active program of scholarship.
• Teach and advise undergraduate students.
• Contribute to department and university service.
• Commitment to LMU's teacher-scholar model.
• Commitment to advancing LMU's mission and promoting the success, sense of belonging, and thriving of students from a variety of lived experiences.
• Demonstrated ability to foster inclusive and accessible learning environments.

Responsibilities

• Teach lower- and upper-division courses in African American Studies.
• Offer courses that fit into the African American Studies curriculum.
• Engage in teaching and research in African American Studies, with expertise in areas such as history, law and policy, Black social movements, community organizing, or political thought.
• Maintain an active program of scholarship.
• Teach and advise undergraduate students.
• Contribute to department and university service.
• Contribute to the LMU Core Curriculum, potentially by developing a First-Year Seminar or courses incorporating Interdisciplinary Connections.
• Contribute to LMU's teacher-scholar model through excellent undergraduate teaching, an active research agenda, and innovative forms of student engagement, including collaborative and community-based learning.
• Participate in departmental leadership, academic programming, curriculum development, and mentorship of faculty colleagues and students.
• Assume Department Chair duties, if applicable for established scholars.
