About The Position

The Registered Nurse reports to the Clinical Director, and works in collaboration with the medical oncologist to provide oncology care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation. The Registered Nurse must be clinically competent and able to work in a self-directed and autonomous role. The Registered Nurse must effectively communicate and interact with patients, significant others, and other health care team members.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Valid registration as a Registered nurse in the State of Alabama
  • Active Alabama state nursing license without any restrictions
  • 1,000 hours within the last 30 months working in adult oncology nursing
  • 12 months working as a RN in the past 36 months
  • Minimum of 10 contact hours in oncology nursing continuing education (CE) or have completed oncology nursing course within the past 36 months

Responsibilities

  • Preparation, mixing and administration of chemotherapy oncology medications
  • Helps in the development of written institutional policies for chemotherapy certification, administration of antineoplastic drugs (all routes), safe drug handling and disposal, management of untoward reactions, such as allergic reactions, and methods for documentation
  • Ensures the correct dose and drug are administered by the correct route to the right patient
  • Assessment of patients past health history, health practices, and both the patients and the familys knowledge of the disease and its treatment
  • Works in collaboration with the patient, significant other and medical oncologist to assess, plan, develop, implement and review the treatment plan
  • Provides education, including written and visual teaching aids, to patient and significant other regarding disease process and treatment plan, including side effects or problems that patients might experience from the regimen
  • Aware of expected outcomes and possible complications as it relates to oncology treatment plan and effectively communicates this information to patient and significant other
  • Independently assesses the patients general physical and emotional status
  • Completes detailed nursing history and physical examination
  • Is aware of the results and general implications of all relevant laboratory, pathology, and imaging studies
  • Coordinates multiple and complex technologies used in cancer diagnosis and treatment, including but not limited to direct patient care, documentation in the medical record, participation in therapy, symptom management, organization of referrals to other healthcare providers, counseling throughout diagnosis, therapy and follow up
  • Takes direction and initiates actions that will allow the assumption of cross-functional duties to ensure seamless patient care
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Minimizes non-productive time and fill slow periods with activities that will enable meeting future needs of the department and/or organization
  • Complies with organizational policies and procedures
  • Responsible for ensuring ongoing certification and training goals are met
