The Oncology Nurse provides professional nursing care through assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. This role involves collecting and analyzing comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or situation to determine the diagnosis or issues. Responsibilities include performing primary and secondary patient assessments, documenting accurately and timely, and communicating systematic reports to other care providers. The nurse will coordinate care delivery, utilize resources to promote the continuum of care, and demonstrate knowledge and skill in all aspects of IV therapy and hydration. Strategies to promote health in a safe environment will be employed, and progress toward outcomes will be evaluated and documented. The nurse will identify expected interventions and outcomes for an individualized plan of care, communicating effectively with the patient, family, and other team members. The plan of care will be implemented in a safe, timely, and appropriate manner. Management of patient care will be based on knowledge of cancer, cancer treatment, and side effects. Quality and evidence-based practice will be used to deliver and improve care. The nurse will work closely with more experienced clinicians for guidance and supervision. Specific duties may include demonstrating knowledge and skills in chemotherapy/biotherapy and blood products in Infusion/Treatment Departments, or demonstrating knowledge of radiation therapies and procedures, including side effect and symptom management in Radiation Oncology Departments. The ability to triage patients and coordinate with providers to ensure care needs are met is essential. The nurse must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
