About The Position
The Oncology Nurse Clinician PNE reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values; follows its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program; and complies with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and accreditation standards. Working in a multidisciplinary environment, the clinician coordinates care using the nursing process and builds effective relationships with patients, physicians, and clinical and administrative teams. The role focuses on assessing patient and family needs, coordinating new-patient care and appointments, educating patients and caregivers, supporting transitions of care, and contributing to a safe, collaborative, and continuously improving care environment.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited Registered Nurse program.
- Registered Nurse license in the state of Illinois.
- Current nursing experience within the past 5 years.
- BLS certification.

Responsibilities
- Assess and reassess patients and families for ongoing care needs, recognize high-risk criteria, and make timely referrals to appropriate resources.
- Collect and analyze data for new patients, identify and coordinate multidisciplinary care and appointments, triage information, and schedule patients appropriately.
- Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary staff to coordinate new patients for multidisciplinary clinics and help create a collaborative plan of care.
- Serve as a resource to non-clinical staff responding to prospective patients who contact the program for information.
- Explain the rationale for clinical decisions using critical thinking.
- Provide patient care in a manner that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical or health care errors.
- Identify learning needs, abilities, preferences, readiness, support systems, coping mechanisms, and barriers to learning, making referrals as appropriate.
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers about diagnoses, processes, therapies, and testing.
- Assist with transitions of care and providers.
- Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with team members, respecting and understanding other clinical disciplines.
- Delegate appropriately to other care providers to help meet patient needs in a timely manner.
- Promote a positive work environment.
- Pursue personal development and growth beyond routine educational sessions.
- Support the growth and learning of new employees and care team members.
- Maintain current nursing knowledge and competency through ongoing education and formal or independent learning.
