About The Position

Emory University is seeking a qualified Internal Medicine physician to serve as an academic hospitalist for the Inpatient Medical Oncology service at Winship Cancer Institute. This role involves providing direct patient care, supervising advanced practice providers and trainees, and supporting clinical trials. The position offers opportunities for teaching, research (including outcomes research and quality initiatives), and on-the-job learning in Medical Oncology and Palliative Medicine. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.

Requirements

  • Qualified Internal Medicine physician.
  • Expertise in inpatient management of acute illnesses and complications/exacerbations of chronic illnesses.
  • Prior experience as an academic hospitalist is preferred.
  • Passion for developing competencies to provide excellent care to patients with cancer through on-the-job training and learning opportunities (for candidates without preferred qualifications).

Nice To Haves

  • Additional training/experience in Palliative Medicine or Medical Oncology.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 24 weeks of inpatient service per year, including direct patient care and admissions.
  • Supervise and teach advanced practice providers and trainees (fellows and residents).
  • Support clinical trials in the inpatient setting.
  • Collaborate with clinicians in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Winship Cancer Institute, and across Emory University.
  • Oversee the care of medical oncology inpatients, focusing on quality, clinical processes, protocol management, safety, communication, documentation, and admission/discharge management.
  • Maintain scheduled rotations of physician members.
  • Ensure healthy utilization/productivity of MD and APP FTEs, assess needs, and plan for service growth & expansion.
  • Work with advanced practice leaders to ensure coordination of care and management of related inpatients.
  • Coordinate care with leaders in Winship outpatient units.
  • Cooperate with leaders of other professional services to provide seamless care and improve quality and outcomes.
  • Participate in clinical staff committees.
