About The Position

Winship is seeking qualified candidates for the Oncology Data Specialist- Certified Senior position. This role serves as lead registrar overseeing workflow and abstracting operations, and implements and performs quality control of cancer registry data. The position assists with the coordination of special studies and projects of the Commission on Cancer and interacts and communicates with registry staff on specific abstracting, coding, editing, follow-up and/or other quality assurance activities. The role also assists with training and orienting staff to ensure dissemination of changes and/or new requirements of the ACoS/ GCCR /NAACCR /NCDB, and assists in the preparation of spreadsheets and data presentations. The Oncology Data Specialist identifies patients alleged to have specific disease diagnoses, confirms the diagnosis clinically or pathologically, and determines whether these patients meet specific criteria for inclusion in a database. Responsibilities include abstracting demographic, diagnostic, epidemiologic, treatment and survival information from inpatient and outpatient reports, records and electronic databases, coding data, and following up with patients, physicians, and clinics to obtain and update missing data. The role may periodically audit others' abstracts, review the accuracy of the database, and correct or update entered records, as well as generate and review reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a related field.
  • Must be (ODS-C) Oncology Data Specialist Certified through the National Cancer Registrars Association.
  • Two years of medical abstracting experience in a cancer registry.
