About The Position

The Tigard Public Library seeks several On-Call Librarians to help patrons access technology and find materials they want and need. These positions provide professional level reference, readers advisory, and technology support at the adult and children's reference desks. On-Call Librarians fill weekday, evening, weekend and short notice scheduling needs. These On-Call positions do not have a regular schedule from week to week. On-Call Librarians help provide reference desk coverage for planned and unplanned absences in the Readers Services division. There are opportunities to accept shifts weeks in advance for planned absences, and on short notice for unplanned absences.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in library science from an accredited college or university
  • Some library experience
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional librarianship
  • Skills in using a variety of technology hardware and software
  • Knowledge and skills with online search strategies
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to effectively deal with the public
  • Skill in teaching and assisting patrons

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming environment for all patrons.
  • Assist with technology troubleshooting and navigation of technology hardware and software.
  • Provide informational reference using online or physical resources and/or databases.
  • Offer reading, viewing, and/or listening recommendations to patrons using knowledge, online tools, and/or navigation of physical collection.
  • Interpret and apply city and library policies and procedures.
  • Ensure positive and harmonious interaction and relationships amongst patrons and library staff.
  • Provide support with library projects such as displays, booklists, or other projects as assigned.
