About The Position

WSP currently has opportunities for On-Call Archaeology Field Technicians for project work in California. Selected applicants will primarily monitor construction projects with our Earth & Environment Cultural Resource Team and will have open opportunities to become part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their cultural resource challenges. This On-Call Archaeology Field Technician position will work with supervisory field staff and senior archaeologists to complete assigned fieldwork tasks (primarily monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery). Compensation will be commensurate with credentials and experience. Current project contributions are needed in Southern California; however, the successful candidate should expect upcoming or future fieldwork opportunities in adjacent states including Nevada and Arizona. The positions are expected to take active roles in conducting monitoring and survey fieldwork and supporting field data collection. The successful candidate will have experience with various digital data collection software (such as ESRI FieldMaps, Survey 123, and WildNote) and would be expected to contribute to the completion of state DPR-523 forms.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree (MS/MA preferred) in anthropology, archaeology, historical archaeology
  • 1-3+ years related archaeological field experience in California
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team environment, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of cultural resources and environmental regulations and North American archaeology including Southern California, Mojave Desert, and Great Basin.
  • Experience with ESRI FieldMaps.
  • Experience with NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, and relevant state laws.
  • Ability to perform pedestrian survey and carry up to 25 lbs. of personal gear and company equipment.
  • Ability to perform archaeological fieldwork (survey, monitoring) in hot, dry high-desert conditions.
  • Experience identifying and analyzing a wide variety of archaeological materials from prehistoric and historic-period archaeological sites in the field.
  • Must be willing to travel to a remote project location for up to 10-day rotations.
  • Willing travel to project site in Southern California. Per diem provided.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience in California, Great Basin, or Southwest United States.
  • Large scale construction monitoring and/or terrestrial survey project experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Participation in cultural resource monitoring during preconstruction and construction activities.
  • Participating in and/or contributing to cultural resource investigations in support of our clients’ projects. These efforts require compliance with NEPA, NHPA, NAGPRA, and other federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
