About The Position

As a nationally accredited program with a strong educational component within The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) investigates deaths occurring across New Mexico that are sudden, violent, untimely, unexpected, or involve an unknown cause. OMI is a special program within the Department of Pathology. It determines the cause and manner of death in these cases and provides formal death certification. OMI is seeking an experienced and dynamic IT Analyst to supervise staff and support critical information technology operations in a vital, fast-paced forensic and clinical environment. This is a hands-on supervisory position responsible for directing assigned IT personnel while also performing technical analysis, systems administration, troubleshooting, application support, data management, project coordination, and user consultation. The IT Analyst plays a central role in maintaining the reliability, security, availability, and effective use of technology supporting OMI's statewide investigative, clinical, records, laboratory, imaging, administrative, and operational functions. The position works closely with OMI leadership, University technology partners, vendors, contractors, and users to implement institutional IT strategies, policies, security requirements, and technology initiatives. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic and the ability to lead people and manage technical work in an ambiguous and complex environment. The role requires strong written and verbal communication with varied stakeholders inside and outside the University; adaptability; analytical judgment; discretion; confidentiality; and a process-driven approach to complex projects, operational risks, and competing priorities.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree
• at least 1 year of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

• Provide active supervision, technical leadership, and operational direction to assigned IT staff, student employees, contractors, or other personnel.
• Organize, prioritize, assign, and monitor daily work, service requests, projects, maintenance activities, and system responsibilities.
• Establish clear written expectations, deadlines, priorities, service standards, and quality requirements, and follow up to confirm completion.
• Provide coaching, training, feedback, and cross-training; assess competency before assigning independent responsibility for critical or elevated-access work.
• Monitor employee performance, attendance, customer service, documentation, and adherence to established procedures.
• Complete supervisory documentation, including performance evaluations, coaching records, attendance documentation, and performance feedback, and consult leadership and Human Resources regarding corrective action when appropriate.
• Address staff concerns, conflicts, performance gaps, workload issues, and procedural deviations promptly, consistently, and based on documented facts.
• Plan coverage for critical IT functions and promptly communicate staffing, workload, continuity, or single-person dependency concerns.
• Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues involving hardware, software, applications, networks, systems, telecommunications, printers, scanners, label printers, and related technology.
• Maintain an organized ticketing or work-management process so requests are documented, prioritized, assigned, updated, and closed appropriately.
• Prioritize work based on safety, security, case operations, number of users affected, operational impact, deadlines, and risk.
• Provide effective technical assistance to onsite and fully remote employees with varying levels of technology proficiency.
• Identify recurring problems and implement sustainable corrective solutions instead of relying on repeated temporary fixes.
• Communicate service status, expected next steps, planned maintenance, outages, risks, and realistic timelines to users and leadership.
• Support and administer OMI servers, storage, databases, services, interfaces, operating systems, network-connected devices, and specialized infrastructure.
• Monitor system health, storage capacity, availability, performance, logs, backups, certificates, licensing, patching, security status, and lifecycle risks.
• Maintain secure backup, restoration, disaster-recovery, and business-continuity processes and participate in restoration testing.
• Apply role-based access and least-privilege principles and maintain appropriate controls for administrator, service, vendor, and shared accounts.
• Support encryption, multifactor authentication, endpoint protection, secure remote access, logging, patching, and other required security controls.
• Immediately report suspected phishing, malware, unauthorized access, data exposure, credential compromise, lost devices, backup failures, or other significant incidents through required channels.
• Preserve relevant logs and technical records and participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, after-action review, and corrective-action planning.
• Support OMI's medical records and case-management system, including workflows, modules, permissions, reports, interfaces, data fields, testing, data integrity, and troubleshooting.
• Develop, administer, and maintain approved databases, SQL queries, reports, views, data-validation controls, and related documentation.
• Support OMI's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), imaging workstations, image storage, interfaces, permissions, vendor coordination, and continuity procedures.
• Develop and administer approved Smartsheet solutions, including sheets, forms, reports, dashboards, automations, Dynamic Views, access controls, and documentation.
• Develop and support SharePoint sites, pages, lists, libraries, forms, permissions, metadata, views, workflows, and related solutions.
• Support forensic, laboratory, imaging, and vendor-managed technology that may fall outside standard University deployment and support processes.
• Protect the integrity, confidentiality, availability, and appropriate use of medical, investigative, photographic, personnel, financial, and operational data.
• Coordinate user onboarding, offboarding, transfers, equipment deployment and recovery, account provisioning, file ownership transfers, and role-based access changes.
• Maintain accurate inventories and documentation for computers, mobile devices, peripherals, printers, specialized equipment, software, system configurations, warranties, licenses, assigned users, locations, and replacement status.
• Configure, deploy, maintain, reassign, recover, surplus, and securely dispose of equipment through approved University processes.
• Maintain current permission matrices, privileged-account records, approval pathways, and system-owner information, and conduct periodic access reviews.
• Promptly secure or disable lost, stolen, compromised, or unreturned equipment and access.
• Assess departmental technology needs and translate operational requirements into secure, maintainable technical solutions and specifications.
• Assist with or lead the implementation, configuration, testing, maintenance, integration, upgrade, and support of information systems and technology initiatives.
• Develop or contribute to needs assessments, technical proposals, project plans, risk assessments, cost comparisons, implementation plans, and recommendations.
• Include affected OMI divisions in requirements gathering, workflow design, user acceptance testing, readiness, training, and implementation decisions.
• Use documented review, approval, testing, communication, rollback, and recovery processes for material production changes.
• Support implementation of University-wide systems, security rollouts, identity tools, enterprise applications, timekeeping systems, collaboration platforms, and required software installations.
• Evaluate proposed software and technology for compatibility, security, privacy, accessibility, records retention, licensing, integration, supportability, cost, and sustainability, and coordinate required University reviews.
• Create and maintain accurate technical procedures, system documentation, configuration records, user guides, continuity instructions, project records, and troubleshooting information in approved shared locations.
• Train users and assigned staff on new or updated systems, processes, security requirements, and technology tools, and confirm understanding and competency when appropriate.
• Collaborate with UNM IT, HSC IT, Information Security, vendors, contractors, departmental leadership, and other stakeholders to resolve complex issues and implement improvements.
• Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies, institutional IT standards, accessibility requirements, security expectations, records obligations, and applicable policies and procedures.
• Escalate significant risks, unresolved problems, failed implementations, vendor concerns, data-integrity issues, or decisions requiring leadership direction promptly.
