About The Position

This is a responsible, part-time position within the Parks, Recreation, and Communications Department that supports the overall operations, programs, facilities, events, and services of the department. Employees may be assigned to a variety of duties based on departmental needs and are cross-trained to assist in multiple areas and roles. Work may include customer service, recreation programming, facility operations, special events, public information services, administrative support, communications, registrations and payments, and other departmental activities. Employees may work at various City facilities, programs, and events and are expected to provide professional and courteous service to residents and visitors. The position requires flexibility and a willingness to assist wherever needed to support the efficient operation of the Parks, Recreation, and Communications Department. Specific duties and assignments may vary based on staffing, programming, facility, seasonal, and operational needs.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 35 pounds
  • Ability to demonstrate techniques and skills associated with the position
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Interest in working with children and supporting youth in an educational and recreational setting
  • Ability to provide a safe, positive, and supportive environment for students
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow directions, policies, and safety procedures
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work scheduled shifts consistently
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Willingness to learn and participate in program training
  • Ability to pass required background checks and pre-employment screenings as required by the City

Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial duties such as cleaning locker rooms, bathrooms, bleachers, changing arena trash, and snow removal if necessary
  • Perform ice resurfaces in accordance to ice schedule
  • Enforce Arena rules and policies – no running in the bleachers, no stick and ball play, etc.
  • Perform minor repair and maintenance work such as replacing broken glass
  • Safely operate the Olympia ice resurfacer and complete scheduled ice resurfaces for hockey, figure skating, public skating, rentals, and other activities.
  • Monitor and maintain ice conditions and assist with hockey nets, rink equipment, locker rooms, and preparation for scheduled activities.
  • Perform routine inspections of the Olympia and related equipment and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Complete daily building inspections to identify and report maintenance, safety, cleanliness, or facility concerns.
  • Perform daily custodial duties, including cleaning restrooms, locker rooms, common areas, entrances, emptying trash, mopping, restocking supplies, and other general cleaning.
  • Assist with opening and closing the facility and ensure the building is clean, safe, secure, and prepared for scheduled activities.
  • Provide customer service and assist visitors, participants, coaches, officials, renters, and spectators as needed.
  • Assist with front desk operations, registrations, payments, programs, rentals, special events, and other departmental activities as assigned.
  • Cross-train in other departmental roles and facilities and provide coverage or assistance based on staffing and operational needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Parks, Recreation, and Communications Department.
