About The Position

Older Youth Leaders work directly with an assigned class of approximately 20–25 students, serving as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor. The role requires a genuine interest in students’ growth and development and in providing a safe, nurturing environment. Leaders use leadership, communication, and patience to establish authority and provide students with stability and support. The position requires hard work, flexibility, and commitment to help students reach their potential.

Requirements

• Have 48 college semester units or 60 college quarter units, or a bachelor’s degree.
• Be able to speak and write Standard English appropriate for a public school setting.
• Be at least 22 years old.
• Have at least six months of experience working with a group of 10 or more students in a classroom, afterschool, or recreation environment.
• Have advanced math and English skills for grades 6–12.
• Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Be biliterate to support English-learner students; Spanish is preferred.
• Pass a Live Scan criminal background check via fingerprinting.
• Provide a clear TB test.
• Pass advanced math and English skills testing for grades K–8.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a positive adult role model through appropriate dress, speech, and attitude.
• Provide homework assistance, academic enrichment, and physical activity using program-provided curriculum and materials.
• Create an engaging environment that fosters a sense of belonging for older youth.
• Support students in making positive behavior choices and take disciplinary measures when appropriate.
• Engage students by following, implementing, and assisting in creating lesson plans.
