About The Position

The Nebraska State Patrol is looking for a self-motivated, detail-oriented individual with exceptional customer service to process Nebraska licensing applicant background checks. As a Criminal Background Office Specialist, the focus will be to provide accurate criminal history background checks to state licensing agencies and law enforcement. As part of the team, you will be responsible for processing criminal history background checks, accurately disseminating records to various state agencies in Nebraska as well as fostering positive relationships with the public, prospective employers, and other law enforcement agencies. Under immediate to general supervision, the background team member will process Nebraska licensing applicant background checks; accept applicant fingerprint cards, research payment information through our online payment system, and verify agency authorization for entry into the Record Information Tracking System; process applicant background checks for various state agencies and employers in Nebraska; accurately disseminate information and foster positive relationships with the public, prospective employers, law enforcement and state agencies. You will problem solve, review data for deficiencies or errors, correct incompatibilities, and accurately enter applicant information into various computer programs.

Requirements

  • Coursework/training in administrative/office support functions, procedures, and methods including the operation of personal computers and office equipment; or areas related to the programs and functions of the employing agency.
  • Experience in customer service or public contact; or applying criteria/regulations; and/or performing administrative/office/secretarial support work including use of personal computers and office equipment.
  • Vision must be correctable to a range that will allow reading of detailed database information and viewing of information displayed on computer terminals and printouts.
  • Applicants will be screened for a record of criminal activity and criminal history using a fingerprint-based check before a final offer of employment is made.
  • Applicants must be free of felony convictions.
  • Applicants cannot maintain a continuous association or dealings with persons, groups or organizations under criminal investigation or indictment or who have a reputation for present, ongoing involvement in felonious or criminal behavior.
  • Applicant must successfully complete an extensive background screening prior to being employed, which includes completion of a Personal History Questionnaire.
  • Knowledge of the practices and procedures pertinent to office/clerical support operations
  • Knowledge of the methods of filing, record keeping, bookkeeping, and mailing
  • Knowledge of computer operations and standard software and hardware applications
  • Knowledge of the purpose and activities of the employing agency
  • Knowledge of the work unit policies and guidelines pertinent to office/clerical support operations
  • Knowledge of the functions and specialized terminology associated with the work unit and agency
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation to recognize and correct errors
  • Knowledge of the procedures of manual and electronic file maintenance, record keeping, and mail distribution
  • Ability to code/sort and file/retrieve records/documents established indexing/filing systems
  • Ability to identify similarities and differences between two or more sets of data
  • Ability to communicate in person, by telephone or email
  • Ability to communicate effectively with work unit supervisors, co-workers, other agency employees, and customers or visitors to exchange information
  • Ability to understand and apply instructions
  • Ability to compute/total figures involving the use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and fractions
  • Ability to determine course of action to correct inaccurate or incomplete records/documents
  • Ability to file and record information using numerical, alphabetical, and other records keeping systems
