About The Position

Virginia Defenders- Indigent Defense Commission (IDC) is excited to announce the opportunity to be on the front lines of what many consider to be the modern-day Civil Rights Movement-criminal justice and justice reform. This is a unique platform to develop and pursue social change and impact the lives of clients. The Newport News Public Defender's Office is seeking to fill an Office Manager position that will serve our mission of protecting and defending the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Office Manager reports to the Chief Public Defender of the Newport News office and is employed at-will. This position includes a local salary supplement. Requirements

  • Comprehensive working knowledge of office practices and procedures and office equipment.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Experience in creating and editing letters, memos, and correspondence.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an office.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise multiple subordinate staff members.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide direct administrative support.
  • Ability to remain organized.
  • Ability to accurately enter data.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team-driven environment.
  • Ability to lead by a positive example.
  • Ability to learn and accept constructive criticism.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in addressing issues and questions.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Previous work experience in an office of the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct support to the Public Defender.
  • Supervises support staff.
  • Serves as the point of contact and coordinates the daily activities of the Public Defender's Office.
  • Communicates and interacts with the public, office colleagues, and judicial personnel.
  • Coordinates building maintenance.
  • Assists the Chief Deputy with docket call.
  • Manages supply orders.
  • Interacts with VIDC administration as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
