About The Position

Churchill County is accepting applications for the part-time position (approximately 12.5 hours per week) of Office Intern at the District Attorney's Office in the Criminal Division. These positions are established to give high school and college students employment opportunities where they can learn a variety of job skills in an office environment. For this position for the District Attorney's Office, successful candidates must have their own reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and a good driving record. Because federal law requires employees to be 17 years old to drive for their employers, you must be at least 17 years old to be considered for this position. Employees will be reimbursed for mileage for using their vehicles. The Office Interns need to be available several days per week (Monday through Friday) between the hours of 8 AM to 5 PM, for approximately 12.5 hours per week. We are looking for candidates who are mature and are committed to working diligently, during the school year and, ideally, through the summer as well. POSITION SUMMARY: Beginning with close supervision and moving on to being under general supervision, performs a broad range of staff support and/or clerical activities and runs office errands. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is an entry-level position, usually filled by high school or college students who are seeking to acquire work experience and additional job knowledge.

Requirements

  • Some exposure or experience in an office setting is desirable; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of the department to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.
  • Knowledge of business arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of office administrative practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of business letter writing and the standard format for typed materials.
  • Knowledge of record keeping principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of techniques for dealing with the public, in person and over the telephone.
  • Skill in performing administrative support work in assigned of areas/disciplines.
  • Skill in reading and explaining rules, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in organizing, maintaining and researching office files.
  • Skill in compiling and summarizing information and preparing periodic or special reports.
  • Skill in contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or department goals, objectives and activities.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, and the public.
  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Must have own reliable transportation.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must have a good driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers and picks up documents from various locations; runs errands as needed for the department or county.
  • Establishes and maintains office files; researches and compiles information from such files; purges files as required.
  • Opens and distributes mail, processes outgoing mail; photocopies documents for staff.
  • Enters, edits and retrieves data and prepares reports, using a computer system and following established formats and menus; scans documents into a computer system.
  • Acts as receptionist, as directed, and receives and screens visitors and telephone calls and takes messages; provides basic factual information regarding County or departmental activities and functions.
  • Cleans office areas, kitchen areas, department vehicles, etc. as directed; organizes storage areas.
  • Operates standard office equipment, including word processors, computers, scanners, facsimile equipment and central telephones; may operate microfilm, radio telephone and other departmental-specific equipment after training.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
