About The Position

As a Laboratory Office Assistant, you will greet customers, schedule appointments, answer and direct telephone calls and mail, and assist clients in completing any necessary forms. You will enter Physician orders and retrieves test results from the laboratory information system, file reports and enter manual charges for proper patient billing. Experience with following detailed information, policies and processes will help you be successful in this role. You will also work with word processing and database computer programs, maintain patient logs, and assist with the maintenance of the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and billing compliance/audits. Knowledge of general laboratory workflow and basic medical terminology, understanding of Laboratory Medicine, or equivalent exposure to these topics is preferred.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience with computer programs (MS Word, Excel) preferred.
  • Prior EPIC experience and familiarity with ICD and CPT4 codes preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of hospital experience as an office assistant preferred.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory workflow and basic medical terminology, understanding of Laboratory Medicine, or equivalent exposure to these topics is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists clients in completing all necessary forms.
  • Accurately schedules and records appointments.
  • Works closely with hospital Admitting personnel to ensure rapid admission of the patient into the system, and reduce patient waiting time. Registers lab patients into the short form admitting system.
  • Promptly and professionally receives/processes specimens from clients.
  • Inventories and orders supplies as needed, accurately completes the proper requisition for orders, on supply requisitions or ordering cards.
  • Prepares and/or updates office procedures annually, and has them appropriately reviewed.
  • Oversees lab patient charges; maintains billing codes, monitors and audits/updates lab charges. Audits the reference lab bill to ensure accuracy of charges.
  • Monitors laboratory billing compliance forms for patient signature.
  • Enters reference lab results into the LIS.
  • Develops and implements procedures for legal drug screen collections. Performs legal drug screens, ensures that drug screens are performed efficiently and the companies receive the results in a timely manner. Works closely with company supervisors to determine which legal drug screen is needed for their company, as well as, discussing the prices for each test.
  • Performs paternity testing, this includes verifying patient identification, completing legal documents and obtaining buccal swab specimens on patients of all ages.
  • Monitors miscellaneous lab tests that are not currently in EPIC.
  • Trains hospital laboratory staff on EPIC.
