About The Position

Peraton is hiring an Oceanographic/Bathymetric Research Scientist at the Stennis Space Center on a hybrid part-time/on-call basis. As a member of the Geology and Geophysics research group at NRL, your role will center on the expert management of critical bathymetry data. You will be responsible for the entire data lifecycle, from sourcing and curation to formatting diverse geophysical datasets. A core function of this position is proficient interaction with the DBDB-V database, including both data ingestion and the precise extraction of information. The data you manage and extract will be directly coupled with NRL's advanced machine learning and modeling frameworks, providing the foundational information for predictive environmental assessments. Your duties will include identifying and acquiring relevant datasets and verifying their accuracy. A primary focus of this role is the expert handling of the DBDB-V database, which involves formatting and ingesting various data types into the system. Crucially, you will be required to efficiently extract and manipulate information from the database for analysis, reporting, and integration with NRL modeling frameworks. You will also use scripting languages like Python or C++ to automate data transformation, create and maintain metadata, and document all processes to ensure transparency and reproducibility.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years with PhD
  • PhD in data science, computer science, geospatial information systems, or a related field
  • Direct experience with DBDB-V is required
  • Proficiency in data management tools (e.g., SQL, Excel, R, and/or Python for data manipulation)
  • Basic understanding of database structure and use
  • Excellent documentation skills and collaborative attitude
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship is required
