Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) supports patient well-being, rehabilitation, and recovery by providing direct support. COTAs can work in various settings like hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes, helping patients with physical, mental, emotional, or social limitations to improve their quality of life and independence. Any position involving direct patient care is considered safety-sensitive. The role involves evaluating patient health and wellness, conducting tests to assess mobility, emotional and social skills, and overall health, and inquiring about pain levels and recurring issues. COTAs collaborate with Occupational Therapists to develop treatment plans, including inpatient techniques and home-based exercises. They maintain detailed patient progress records, report to the Occupational Therapist, and ensure client and organizational confidentiality. Periodic assessments of patient progress are conducted, comparing current wellness levels to therapy plan benchmarks. The role supports therapeutic activities and patient success by operating equipment and devices, delivering high customer service, and demonstrating leadership through communication, relationship building, self-development, and teamwork. Effective communication with the healthcare team, adherence to safety and infection control practices, and the ability to think quickly in stressful situations are essential. Other duties as assigned within the scope of practice are also included.
