The Occupational Therapist confirms and interprets physician referrals, performs patient assessments and plans and implements individualized treatment programs taking into account the patient’s developmental and/or chronological age and medical diagnoses in accordance with the regulations governing the principles and practice of Occupational Therapy. This role involves an acute care patient base with a Flex/PRN schedule. The therapist provides patient care based upon physician referral and age-appropriate assessment, coordinating care and clinical activities through communication with patients, families, therapists, team leaders, managers, physicians, and other healthcare team members. Documentation in the patient’s medical record and completion of other patient care-related forms are required in compliance with regulatory agencies and department/hospital policies. The role includes supervising OTAs and collaborating with other therapy staff, support staff, volunteers, and students. Participation in in-services, performance improvement, program development/evaluation, new employee orientation, committee membership, peer review, and staff meetings is also expected. Supervision of Certified Occupational Therapist Assistants (COTAs) is provided as per state licensure/practice standards and Federal regulations. The role may involve orienting new employees and guiding volunteers, students, support, or contract staff. Communication may occur with individuals inside or outside the organization, potentially involving problem-solving, consultation, advising, or interpretation services. Access to patient information is required for job performance. Cost containment initiatives in the immediate work unit/department are also suggested. Within the scope of license, age-specific criteria, and per physician referral, the therapist interprets physician orders, performs patient assessments, and plans and implements individualized patient treatment programs.
