The Occupational Therapist functions as part of a multidisciplinary team and provides occupational Therapy assessment, planning, goal development and provides appropriate intervention services to assist special needs students in acquiring functional performance skills. This role involves evaluating student performance in areas such as fine motor tasks, oral dysfunction, sensory impairments, perceptual motor skills, posture, and movement. The therapist will formulate and implement individual treatment plans aligned with assessments, educational implications, and IEP goals. Responsibilities include recommending strategies to meet student needs, collaborating with medical personnel and multidisciplinary teams, and working with teachers and support staff to reinforce therapy needs. Effective communication and collaboration with staff and family members are crucial for integrating therapy activities into home and school environments to optimize student progress. Direct training for support staff involved with students is also a key function. The role requires maintaining safe equipment and a therapeutic environment, regularly re-evaluating individual therapy plans, and developing/reviewing student goals in accordance with IEPs. Maintaining appropriate records and attending IEP meetings are essential duties. The Occupational Therapist will also supervise a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).
