The Occupational Therapist helps patients regain independence and quality of life so they can safely perform daily activities. The role assesses patients with varied diagnoses, including orthopedic, neurological, sensory, and cancer-recovery needs; develops treatment plans; and conducts evaluations and re-evaluations. The therapist collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, maintains thorough documentation, and provides motivating care to a high volume of patients. Success requires flexibility, adaptability, strong organization, and a personable, motivating team-oriented approach. Patients may range from neonatal through geriatric ages, but staff are assigned only to age groups for which they meet education, experience, and training requirements. Patients aged 0–21 with CCS insurance must either be seen by or receive oversight from a CCS-panelled therapist. The therapist establishes functional goals with the interdisciplinary team, develops and modifies evidence-based treatment plans, incorporates patient and family needs and goals, and provides education to patients, families, Care Partners, and caregivers. The therapist also follows patient precautions and hand-off guidelines, monitors responses to treatment, and reports unusual occurrences.
