About The Position

This position assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs to improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and prevent deformity in patients suffering from disease or injury. The Occupational Therapist will also educate patients, families, and caregivers on preventing further injury or impairment. The role involves assessing patients' physical and mental abilities, reviewing medical records, and analyzing data to set realistic rehabilitation goals. The therapist will monitor treatment effectiveness, ensure accurate patient charges, and develop teaching plans. This role requires knowledge of occupational therapy modalities and equipment, coordination with the healthcare team, and supervision of support personnel. Participation in student clinical education and health promotion programs is also expected. The therapist will adhere to AOTA standards, treat patients with dignity, identify psychosocial needs, and maintain a safe environment. Compliance with the health system's Ethics and Compliance program is mandatory, including reporting variances. Effective communication with patients, providers, and staff is essential, as is attending meetings and completing required training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS)
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Occupational Therapy
  • 1-3 years Health care experience.
  • Occupational Therapist Upon Hire
  • Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 90 Days
  • Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 90 Days
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support & First Aid - American Heart Association Upon Hire

Responsibilities

  • Performs an appropriate assessment on patients as related to therapy requested, with reassessment and documentation on progress toward goals per policy.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct occupational therapy programs in health system or community settings to rehabilitate those impaired because of illness, injury, psychological or developmental problems.
  • Includes patients of all ages 0-100+ as therapists are comfortable and qualified.
  • Assess and evaluate patients' physical and mental abilities, review available medical record, and analyze medical data to determine realistic rehabilitation goals for patients.
  • Observe and evaluate treatment affect and make recommendations or changes to patient provider as needed.
  • Ensures patient charges are accurate and entered on a timely basis per treatment documentation completed.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate. Printed materials are included as appropriate. Family and caregivers are included in training on home programs and other recommendations for aftercare.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of occupational therapy modalities, rehab equipment and medical-surgical equipment to provide safe and effective treatments.
  • Coordinates and directs patient care with the rest of the healthcare team to ensure patient needs are met and hospital policy followed.
  • Supervises COTAs, rehab techs and other support personnel to provide care consistent with Iowa law and policy.
  • Participates in Occupational Therapy student clinical education.
  • Develops and participate in health promotion programs, group activities, or discussions to promote patient health, facilitate social adjustment, alleviate stress, and prevent physical or mental disability.
  • Follows standards of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Guide to Occupational Therapy Practice.
  • Treats patients and their families/caregivers with dignity and respect to facilitate an established rehabilitation plan of care.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety and quality through maintenance of a safe environment, providing assistance to patients and visitors and support of safe practices.
  • Performs within the prescribed limits of the health system's Ethics and Compliance program.
  • Responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to immediate supervisor or compliance officer.
  • Communicates appropriately and professionally to patients, providers, health system staff and administrative team.
  • Attends meetings and completes annual trainings as required and maintains general knowledge of budget and stewardship.
