Requirements

  • An occupational therapist must have a minimum of four years of education beyond high school attaining a Bachelor of Science degree or Certificate of Occupational Therapy from a college with a program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
  • He/she should hold certification from the American Occupational Therapy Association.
  • He/she must be licensed to practice occupational therapy in/by the State of New York.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Manager/Director of the Rehabilitation Services Department, the occupational therapist is responsible for providing, arranging for, teaching and supervising occupational therapy services through the process of assessment, planning and implementation.
  • He/she provides advisory service to other professionals who share responsibility for patient care and participates in the development of the rehabilitation program.
  • Provide evaluation and treatment according to approved practices, policies, and procedures of the Rehabilitation Services Department of Ellis Hospital and New York State law.
  • Demonstrates skills and abilities to assess and treat newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Provide approved documentation to appropriate authorities.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with all persons involved in patient care and/or hospital activities
  • Assure financial viability according to standards of practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and developmental processes and understanding of the range of treatment needed for patients with special needs or age-related needs.
  • Develops plans for appropriate equipment needs of patients.
  • Teaches appropriate treatment procedures and supportive activities to patients and caregivers.
  • Promote effective interpersonal and interdisciplinary relationships – professional conduct.
