The Occupational Therapist (OT) in Acute Care is responsible for evaluating patients' physical, perceptual, cognitive, social, and vocational abilities and their impact on daily living activities. The OT establishes and implements individualized treatment plans using appropriate techniques, provides and fabricates assistive devices and splints, and monitors patient progress, adjusting treatment as needed. They also plan for patient discharge, including home programs, patient/family teaching, and ordering equipment. Collaboration with stakeholders, accurate documentation, and adherence to department policies and billing guidelines are essential. The role involves performing manual techniques, patient positioning, and transferring duties, requiring physical exertion. The OT must demonstrate proficiency with modalities and exercise equipment, promote patient safety, and participate in performance improvement activities. They manage their caseload, assist with coverage, and pursue professional growth. The OT may supervise occupational therapy assistants, extenders, and students, delegating tasks and providing guidance while maintaining responsibility for the patient's plan of care.
