The Occupational Therapist in Acute Care will interpret physician referrals and evaluate patients' physical, perceptual, cognitive, social, and vocational abilities and their impact on daily living activities. The role involves establishing and implementing individualized treatment plans based on evaluation results and functional goals, utilizing appropriate techniques. Responsibilities include providing and fabricating assistive devices and splints, monitoring patient progress, adjusting treatment plans, and identifying factors affecting patient comfort. The position also entails planning and completing patient discharge, including home programs, patient/family teaching, and ordering equipment. Communication and collaboration with stakeholders are key to ensuring optimal patient care. Documentation of patient care, progress, statistics, billing, and scheduling according to department policy and accreditation standards is required. The therapist will also be responsible for maintaining productivity standards, adhering to billing and documentation policies, and ensuring the work area is neat and orderly. Manual techniques, patient positioning, transferring, and transporting duties requiring lifting and pushing/pulling are part of the role, as is the skillful use of modalities and exercise equipment. Promoting patient safety, participating in performance improvement activities, and managing assigned caseload are also essential. The role encourages professional growth through continuing education and may involve orienting new staff, participating in coworker evaluations, and supervising occupational therapy assistants, extenders, and students.
