About The Position

The Occupational Therapist will evaluate patients within twenty-four (24) hours, or 1 business day of physician referral. If unable to complete evaluation in 24 hours, documentation in the medical record must clearly define the cause for delay. The therapist will develop an effective treatment plan and obtain approval for services from the referring physician, and then treat patients per the physician treatment plan. This role will assist the nursing department with training of Restorative Aides and supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants in direct patient care and patient-related activities, following the state practice act. Communication with the supervisor and other health team members regarding patient progress, problems, and plans is essential. The therapist will participate in Patient Care Conferences, Utilization Review meetings, and Rehabilitation Conferences as needed, as well as participate in in-service training programs for other staff in the facility. Recording of evaluations, daily treatment notes, weekly progress notes, and recertification documentation is required per the Occupational Therapy Board State Practice Act and governmental and third-party payer requirements. Treatment changes must be recorded per policy and procedures. The therapist will instruct patients' families or nursing staff in maintenance programs and caregiver training in preparation for discharge from therapy services, and participate in discharge planning. Recommending and facilitating the ordering of necessary durable medical equipment for patients to facilitate independence in mobility (e.g., braces, walkers, canes, elevated toilet seats, and grab bars) is also a key responsibility. Reporting any problems with department equipment to ensure it is maintained in good working order is required. The ability to relate positively, effectively, and appropriately with patients/residents, families, staff, and professional colleagues is crucial.
