About The Position

This is professional services work involving the safety of people and protection of equipment. The work involves identification of risks through the assessment of work and inspection of machinery, equipment, construction projects, and state buildings. Responsibilities include staying current on and interpreting the laws, rules, and regulations of OSHA, the Bureau of Labor Standards, other regulatory agencies, and Department policies and procedures to ensure safety and health standards are understood and utilized to maintain a safe and healthy workplace. A primary role is the development and delivery of safety and health related training throughout MaineDOT. Additionally, this position is responsible for auditing and evaluating work conditions, performing personal protective equipment assessments, and addressing safety and health concerns with the intent of developing approved solutions and opportunities in the form of recommending changes to existing and development of new health and safety policies, programs, and work practices. The Occupational Safety Specialists function as a team, individuals provide support and are a resource to other Occupational Safety Specialists throughout the Department. Positions in this classification are differentiated from Safety Compliance Officers because the work requires consultation and advising employers in developing safety compliance programs.

Requirements

  • Six (6) years of education and/or experience in health and safety, fire safety, or directly related area.
