About The Position

The Department of Labor – Workplace Safety & Health Division, SafetyWorks! program is seeking a motivated individual to join their team as an Occupational Health Specialist. This role involves providing on-site consultations and training to various industries, as well as conducting complex occupational health hazard investigations. The position is located in Augusta, with statewide travel required. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of statistics, organic and inorganic chemistry, air sample collection methods and techniques, general industrial processes and operations, laboratory analysis methods and procedures, occupational health hazards found in the workplace and physiology and toxicology.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate and control occupational health hazards, prepare complex technical reports, communicate effectively, write clearly and effectively and present training programs and ability to conduct research.
  • A Bachelors Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Chemistry, or related science and two (2) years specialized experience in a chemical, environmental, or related industrial hygiene field.
  • Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and analyzes information regarding industrial processes in order to identify potential health hazards.
  • Visits industries in order to gather samples and measure environmental hazards in work areas.
  • Conducts field visits and report preparation in order to ensure work is accomplished properly and applicable Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines are followed.
  • Analyzes instrument readings and test reports in order to identify and evaluate environmental health hazards.
  • Advises other State agencies and field staff in order to provide information on hazardous materials, toxic substances, and consumer product safety.
  • Collects and compiles statistical data and prepares reports in order to provide information to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Prepares and presents instruction in order to train others in OSHA standards and regulations.
