About The Position

We are currently seeking an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Specialist to join our team. The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist is accountable for providing delivery of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program. This role will develop, create and support activities to ensure Tru Cooperative Bank’s (“TCB”) safe work policies, processes and procedures are in compliance with applicable Provincial and Federal regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years of recent, related experience in the Health and Safety field.
  • Strong working knowledge of WorksafeBC, Workers Compensation legislation, and the Canada Labour Code.
  • Post-secondary certificate/diploma or degree in Health and Safety, Human Resources or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to attend to detail, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate to and influence people.
  • Self-motivated and a self-starter.
  • Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Ability to understand and utilize computer and web-based systems
  • Displays an understanding of risk and risk ownership by being able to demonstrate adherence to policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Recognized OHS certification (e.g., CRSP or equivalent) or progress toward certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Program Ownership & Governance: Owns and maintains the OHS program, including committees, standards, procedures, and supporting documentation. Ensures the OHS program is compliant with Provincial and Federal regulations. Establishes, maintains, and monitors OHS governance frameworks, including committees, safety representatives, inspections, investigations, and corrective action tracking. Acts as TCB’s designated health and safety authority for audits, regulatory reviews, and external inquiries.
  • Compliance, Risk & Prevention: Leads enterprise-wide hazard identification, risk assessment, and hazard prevention programs. Ensures timely and effective incident and accident investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions. Monitors compliance metrics and trends; escalates risks and systemic issues with clear recommendations and accountability for resolution. Maintains ongoing readiness for regulatory inspections and audits. Coordinates activities such as Fire/Evacuation Drills, Shake out Day, etc. in collaboration with internal partners. Coordinates and delivers health and safety training, orientation, and communications for employees, leaders, and committee members.
  • Occupational Health and Safety: Proactively sources and procures various health and safety items – AED & 72 hr kit supplies/replenishments, personal protective equipment, first aid supplies. Ensure any outstanding items from safety inspections and JOSH committee meetings have been completed to be assured the organization is meeting applicable safety requirements and government legislation. Actively follows up on any outstanding items from inspections/drills.
  • Reporting & Advisory: Develops and reports on OHS metrics, trends, and program effectiveness for senior leadership. Recommends and leads continuous improvement initiatives based on data, regulatory changes, and emerging risks. Serves as the primary strategic advisor to leadership on health and safety risks, obligations, and priorities.
  • Healthy Workplace: Coordinates the ergonomic process and assists leaders and employees on day-to-day related safety issues and escalates to the Director, Total Rewards & Employee Relations as appropriate.
  • Other: Participates in the implementation of TCB’s Mental and Physical Health Strategy and other duties as required.
