About The Position

The Occupational Health Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care and occupational medicine services to employees, employers, and injured workers throughout the Summit Pacific Medical Center service area. The Advanced Practice Provider evaluates and treats occupational injuries and illnesses, manages Washington State Labor & Industries (L&I) and workers' compensation cases, performs employment-related examinations, and supports employer occupational health programs when requested. This position serves an important role in the development, implementation, and growth of Summit Pacific Medical Center's Occupational Health Clinic and works collaboratively with community employers to promote employee health, workplace safety, recovery, and timely return to work. Responsibilities are performed within the provider's professional scope of practice, licensure, clinical privileges, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current national board certification appropriate to clinical practice.
  • Current unrestricted Washington State ARNP license or ability to obtain prior to employment.
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current NCCPA certification.
  • Current unrestricted Washington State Physician Assistant license or ability to obtain prior to employment.
  • Demonstrated competence in patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making.
  • Strong documentation skills and ability to maintain accurate medical records.
  • Ability to perform minor office procedures within granted privileges and professional scope of practice.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with providers, staff, employers, and community partners.
  • Current unrestricted Washington State ARNP or Physician Assistant license, as applicable.
  • Current national certification applicable to professional discipline.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Eligible for medical staff credentialing and privileging at Summit Pacific Medical Center.
  • Eligible to enroll and participate in the Washington State L&I Medical Provider Network.
  • DEA registration if required for assigned clinical responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of occupational injury and illness evaluation and treatment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in Occupational Medicine or Occupational Health.
  • Experience treating Washington State L&I and workers' compensation patients.
  • Knowledge of L&I documentation, APFs, work restrictions, return-to-work planning, and claim management processes.
  • Experience in urgent care, emergency medicine, orthopedics, family medicine, sports medicine, or another setting with a strong musculoskeletal focus.
  • Experience performing laceration repair, splinting, wound care, and outpatient procedures.
  • FMCSA National Registry Certified Medical Examiner certification or willingness to obtain certification after hire.
  • Familiarity with OSHA occupational medical surveillance requirements.
  • Knowledge of respirator clearance processes, hearing conservation programs, occupational audiometry, and pulmonary function testing.
  • Completion of a NIOSH-approved spirometry training program.
  • CAOHC Occupational Hearing Conservation training or related experience.
  • Experience with employer-sponsored occupational health contracts.
  • Experience with self-insured workers' compensation programs.
  • Experience using Epic or comparable electronic health records.
  • Experience helping establish or grow a clinic, program, or healthcare service line.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats acute and ongoing work-related injuries and illnesses.
  • Provides initial and follow-up care for Washington State L&I and self-insured workers' compensation claims.
  • Performs minor office procedures within scope of practice and granted privileges, including wound care, laceration repair and suturing, suture removal, splinting, management of minor burns, and other appropriate outpatient procedures.
  • Evaluates musculoskeletal injuries and coordinates appropriate imaging, rehabilitation services, specialty referral, or higher levels of care when clinically indicated.
  • Develops evidence-based treatment plans that support recovery, functional improvement, and safe return to work.
  • Identifies conditions requiring emergency or specialty evaluation and coordinates timely transfer or referral.
  • Provides patient education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, recovery expectations, and occupational restrictions.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and appropriate clinical documentation within the electronic health record.
  • Serves as attending provider for injured workers when appropriate and within provider qualifications.
  • Completes required L&I documentation accurately and timely, including Reports of Accident (ROA), Activity Prescription Forms (APFs), progress notes, work restrictions, and return-to-work recommendations.
  • Applies Washington State L&I requirements, occupational medicine best practices, and clinical guidelines to workers' compensation cases.
  • Communicates effectively with employers, injured workers, claim managers, vocational counselors, rehabilitation providers, and other members of the care team.
  • Establishes medically appropriate work restrictions and regularly reassesses functional capacity.
  • Supports modified-duty programs, Stay at Work initiatives, and safe return-to-work planning when clinically appropriate.
  • Maintains participation and eligibility requirements for the Washington State L&I Medical Provider Network when applicable.
  • Performs pre-placement, post-offer, and employment-related physical examinations.
  • Performs Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examinations when certified as an FMCSA National Registry Certified Medical Examiner.
  • Conducts non-DOT employment physical examinations.
  • Performs fit-for-duty and return-to-work evaluations.
  • Provides respirator medical evaluations and clearance services consistent with applicable occupational health standards.
  • Participates in occupational medical surveillance programs.
  • Reviews audiometric and spirometry results within established protocols and scope of practice.
  • Evaluates occupational exposures, communicable disease concerns, bloodborne pathogen exposures, and immunization-related occupational health needs.
  • Performs workplace injury evaluations and employer-requested testing consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and employer agreements.
  • Maintains appropriate separation between clinical decision-making and employer business interests, ensuring recommendations remain medically appropriate and patient centered.
  • Partners with clinic leadership to establish and improve Occupational Health workflows, protocols, standing procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Assists with development and standardization of occupational health clinical services.
  • Provides clinical input regarding equipment, supplies, testing capabilities, referral relationships, and future service expansion.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve patient access, service turnaround times, patient experience, employer satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.
  • Participates in employer outreach, education, and relationship-building activities when clinical expertise is beneficial.
  • Serves as a clinical resource regarding occupational injury management, work restrictions, and return-to-work principles.
  • Participates in quality improvement, compliance initiatives, utilization review, and service-line performance improvement activities.
  • Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned.
