About The Position

The Universal Group has an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Health and Safety Advisor to join their Health and Safety team. This role reports to the Regional Manager-OHS and is responsible for ensuring the safety of traffic control personnel at work sites and strict adherence to transport guidelines, including the Ministry of Transportation Traffic Management Manual, Worksafe OHS Regulations, and the company's own OHS guidelines. The OHS Advisor will serve as a primary point of contact for employees, addressing safety inquiries and concerns. This role involves routine site visits to focus on site and personnel safety, enhancing employee competence in safe work execution, and coaching them on safety procedures and road safety regulations. In serious situations, the role may require site closures, drug and alcohol suspicion checks, and investigations to ensure overall work site safety.

Requirements

Certified as a Traffic Control Person (TCP) by a WorkSafe approved training provider.
Class 5 Driver’s License.
Experience in interpreting and applying BC’s Workers Comp Act, OHS Regulations, Policies, Guidelines, and Standards.
BCCSA Certified COR Internal Audit or willingness to obtain.
Level 2 First Aid or willingness to obtain.
Experience with Health and Safety software such as Salus.
Experience with Office 365 and G-Suite.

Nice To Haves

Experience working as a TCP is a strong asset.
Diploma/Certificate and/or previous work experience in Occupational Health and Safety is an asset.
Certification and/or work experience as a CSO or OFA is an asset.

Responsibilities

Support and coach field staff in the safe operation of their duties.
Engage in conflict resolution to de-escalate difficult situations.
Administer training and facilitate timely corrective actions for safety shortcomings on site.
Perform TCP (Traffic Control Person) duties to cover employee breaks/shortages.
Administer first aid if necessary.
Conduct site inspections regularly to ensure safety compliance.
Complete investigations into accidents, unsafe acts on-site, etc.
Conduct Drug and Alcohol reasonable checklists and, if necessary, send employees for Drug and Alcohol testing.
Liaise with clients to ensure regulatory compliance and safety of Universal staff on sites.
Assist with internal COR audits.
Review Health & Safety related documentation.
Assist in the development and communication of Safe Work Practices and Procedures.
Facilitate the Universal Mentorship Program (UMP).
Facilitate the Universal Group’s Injured Worker Engagement Program.
