About The Position

The Occupational Hand Therapist plays a critical role in the rehabilitation and recovery of patients with hand, wrist, and upper extremity injuries or conditions. This position focuses on restoring function, reducing pain, and improving the quality of life for individuals through specialized therapeutic interventions. The therapist collaborates closely with physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement personalized treatment plans. They utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques and modalities to address physical impairments and facilitate patients' return to daily activities and work. Ultimately, the role demands a compassionate and skilled professional dedicated to promoting patient independence and optimal hand function.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.
• Current and valid Occupational Therapist license to practice in the United States.
• Certification as a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) or eligibility to obtain CHT certification within a specified timeframe.
• Demonstrated experience in hand therapy, including assessment and treatment of upper extremity conditions.
• Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to the hand and upper extremity.
• Clinical knowledge and manual therapy skills daily to assess and treat complex hand and upper extremity conditions effectively.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to tailor interventions to individual patient needs and respond to progress or setbacks.
• Proficiency in splinting and therapeutic modalities.
• Organizational skills for maintaining detailed documentation and managing caseloads efficiently.

Nice To Haves

• Advanced training or coursework in hand therapy techniques and splint fabrication.
• Experience working in diverse healthcare settings such as outpatient clinics, hospitals, or rehabilitation centers.
• Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and documentation software.
• Membership in professional organizations such as the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT).

Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients' hand and upper extremity conditions through detailed assessments and diagnostic tools.
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on patient needs, medical history, and therapeutic goals.
• Provide hands-on therapy, including exercises, splinting, manual techniques, and modalities to improve mobility and strength.
• Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans accordingly to ensure effective rehabilitation outcomes.
• Educate patients and their families on injury prevention, home exercise programs, and adaptive techniques to support recovery.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to coordinate comprehensive care.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient evaluations, treatments, and progress notes in compliance with regulatory standards.
• Stay current with advances in hand therapy techniques, research, and best practices through continuing education and professional development.
