Observability Engineer

Toyota Industries CorporationIndianapolis, IN

About The Position

The Observability Engineer is a senior individual contributor responsible for providing reliable visibility, insights, and decision‑ready data across both cloud and on‑premises software operations. The role ensures that leaders, Release Management, and engineering teams have objective signals on system health, risk, and readiness to support predictable delivery and stable operations. This position designs and owns observability standards, dashboards, and signals across environments, turning telemetry into actionable evidence rather than raw data. The Observability Engineer partners closely with Cloud Operations, DevOps, Release Management, and Software Excellence & Enablement (SEE) to ensure that release, operational, and escalation decisions are grounded in facts. Success in this role is measured by clarity, trust, and adoption of observability signals, not by tool count or alert volume.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field; equivalent experience may be considered
  • 4+ years Experience in observability, site reliability, operations, or DevOps roles supporting production systems
  • Strong experience designing and operating observability solutions for complex systems.
  • Experience supporting both cloud‑based and on‑premises software environments.
  • Deep understanding of metrics, logs, traces, and alerts and how they support operational decisions.
  • Experience building dashboards and summaries for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with incident management, operational readiness, and release processes.
  • Ability to turn raw telemetry into clear insights and decision‑ready signals.
  • Experience partnering with engineering and operations teams on instrumentation and standards.
  • Comfort working across tooling boundaries rather than being tied to a single vendor.
  • Clear communicator with a bias toward evidence, clarity, and practical outcomes.
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
  • Employees must follow all information security policies, protect confidential data, complete required training, and report any suspected security incidents to support our information security controls.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain observability standards across cloud and on‑premises environments.
  • Provide clear visibility into system health, performance, reliability, and risk.
  • Build and maintain dashboards, metrics, logs, and alerts that support operational and release decisions.
  • Partner with Release Management to ensure readiness, stability, and risk signals are available prior to release decisions.
  • Ensure observability data supports lifecycle gates, readiness reviews, and post‑deployment stabilization.
  • Define and enforce minimum expectations for logging, metrics, tracing, and alerts.
  • Reduce noise by improving signal quality, alert thresholds, and actionable context.
  • Support incident response by ensuring fast problem identification, diagnosis, and recovery.
  • Enable root‑cause analysis through consistent telemetry and historical data.
  • Integrate observability across CI/CD, deployment, and operational workflows.
  • Work with engineering teams to instrument applications and platforms appropriately.
  • Ensure observability solutions scale across products, environments, and customer deployments.
  • Provide transparent, fact‑based insights to leadership on trends, risks, and system behavior.
