About The Position

We are a 13-bed unit with 4 overflow antepartum rooms, 2 OR suites and a new 4 bed OB-ED. We have 24/7 coverage by a Hospitalist, along with a great group of physicians. Any laboring mom or preterm mom greater than 20 weeks may be seen on this unit; along with postpartum moms needing to be readmitted. Our goal is to adhere to the AWHONN standards. We closely monitor staffing to patient census which means—1:2 laboring patients, 1:1 active labor or C-section, 1:3 antepartum patients and 1:4 triage/OB-ED. We provide patient centered care as the entire health care team work together to care for mother and baby.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
  • Graduate from a Surgical Technologist training program Required
  • 1 year previous operating room experience as a Surgical/Delivery Room Technologist Required
  • 3 years of experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting Required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required

Nice To Haves

  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for handling the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the obstetrical operations performed in the Operating Room located in the Labor and Delivery unit.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
  • Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure.
  • Maintains the sterile field.
  • Performs patient care duties under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Functions as a member of the surgical team in the role of scrub person.
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure which includes review and utilization of appropriate preference card.
  • Assists with room set-up to include opening of sterile supplies.
  • Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medication/solutions needed for procedure.
  • Performs appropriate surgical counts with circulator.
  • Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
  • Assists in draping sterile field.
  • Passes instruments to surgeon during the procedure.
  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
  • Prepares sterile dressings.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Supports licensed staff by performing treatments or procedures as delegated and only those which he/she is competent and in a safe, accurate and timely manner; this includes clipping, prepping surgical site, and positioning of patient.
  • Appropriately modifies the approach to patients when performing specific procedures/tasks.
  • Use appropriate equipment and resources when performing procedures and providing information.
  • Provides comfort and safety measures for the patient.
  • Prepares case carts according to procedure and preference cards.
  • Orders supplies and linen for Labor & Delivery.
  • Serves as willing, cooperative, informative, supportive guide for new employees.
  • Remain competent knowledge in area(s) of surgical aseptic technique, perioperative procedures in Labor & Delivery, surgical scrub for C-sections, D&Cs, and vaginal deliveries.
