About The Position

The OB Nurse Anesthetist will be responsible for providing anesthesia services for obstetric patients, including preoperative evaluation, labor analgesia, neuraxial techniques, and anesthesia for Cesarean sections. This role also involves narcotic accounting and distribution, patient positioning, and transporting duties. The position is part-time, 0.4 FTE, requiring coverage of approximately 17.3 weekends per year, with options for 24 or 48-hour weekend shifts. An in-house call room is provided.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Nurse Anesthetist certification (CRNA) issued by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber license issued by the state of Wisconsin.
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • No experience required.
  • Must be able to fulfill department schedule needs, which may include 24/7 call and weekend coverage, as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preoperative evaluation of obstetric patients.
  • Administer labor analgesia and neuraxial techniques.
  • Provide appropriate anesthesia and analgesia modalities for Cesarean sections.
  • Manage narcotic accounting and distribution.
  • Perform patient positioning and transporting duties.
  • Assemble necessary supplies and equipment for anesthesia administration.
  • Administer intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics prior to procedures.
  • Monitor patient reactions and vital signs during and after anesthesia.
  • Take remedial action when warranted for patient reactions.
  • Submit postoperative reports on patient condition.
  • Maintain records of anesthetics administered.
  • Provide general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care.
  • Induce and maintain anesthesia at required levels.
  • Support life functions during anesthesia administration.
  • Record all pertinent events during anesthesia.
  • Recognize and take corrective action for abnormal patient responses.
  • Provide professional observation and resuscitative care.
  • Determine that an appropriate pre-anesthetic examination has been made by a physician.
  • Ensure relevant tests have been completed and a thorough patient assessment has been performed.
  • Review the patient's condition immediately prior to anesthesia induction.
  • Check the readiness, availability, cleanliness, sterility, and working condition of all anesthesia equipment.
  • Remain with the patient until it is safe to transfer care.
  • Advise personnel responsible for post-anesthetic care of specific patient problems.
  • Administer post-operative epidural pain relief and other post-operative analgesia in collaboration with the surgeon.
  • Make post-anesthetic visits regarding anesthesia-related complications.
  • Respond to life-threatening emergencies (Code Blue/Code 4) and respiratory emergencies by establishing and maintaining an airway under physician direction, if available.
  • Assist nursing units with difficult intravenous (IV) insertions when requested, available, and when other professionals have been unsuccessful.
  • Administer anesthesia under the supervision of the operating surgeon (may).
  • Provide labor analgesia in the Birth Day Center (may).
  • Maintain knowledge of scientific theory, research findings, current practice, and applicable standards.
  • Participate in departmental improvement processes and ASC processes when appropriate (may).
  • Perform various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
