About The Position

Overhaul and Repair Engineering (O&RE) supports the U.S. Navy's fleet readiness by performing overhaul, repair, and modernization work on SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, OHIO, and LOS ANGELES class submarines. This role is involved in all project aspects, from planning and developing technical work documents to supporting final system testing and ship certification. The organization works on electrical systems, mechanical/piping systems, and structural components, aiming to minimize submarine downtime. This specific position focuses on providing creative, technical leadership and problem resolution for skilled trades working the afternoon/evening shift, directly impacting the submarine's return to sea. This includes guidance on unforeseen shipboard conditions, tailoring work procedures, and accounting for fabrication, manufacturing, installation, and testing realities.

Common Electrical Systems include non-propulsion electronic systems (ship control, weapons launch, navigation, sonar, instrumentation), power distribution, electrical methods, hull penetrators, electromechanical actuation, voice communications, interior communication circuits, and fiber-optic data distribution.

Common Mechanical/Piping Systems include valves, actuators, heat exchangers, pipe and machinery fabrication, welding, weapons and countermeasure launching, steering and diving, hatch operability, masts and antennas, shaft and propulsion, hydraulics, and compressed air.

Common Structural Components include pressure and non-pressure hull boundary structures, fabrication, welding, submarine coating, cathodic protection, and non-metallic coverings and treatments.

O&RE operates collaboratively and at a fast pace to maintain submarine safety, stealth, maneuverability, and habitability. Engineers interface with various Electric Boat departments (scheduling, quality assurance, material sourcing, contracts, cost engineering, system testing, skilled trades, project management) and U.S. Navy submariners. On-the-job training and training under experienced engineers will be provided.

Requirements

• Minimum of 10 years of prior work experience associated with maintenance and modernization of commissioned US submarines.
• Prior work experience for developing and/or providing supervisory oversight on operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures in accordance with military technical requirements.
• Prior nuclear electrical experience.
• Prior experience with Nuclear Power Plant Operations.
• Prior Ohio Class Submarine experience.
• The ability to obtain Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance.
• Willingness to travel and support extended off-site assignments as needed.

Responsibilities

• Planning of submarine maintenance, repair, and modernization work through the development of clear and concise procedures contained in technical work documents.
• Interpretation of shipbuilding specifications, military specifications and standards, maintenance requirements, construction drawings, and contractual requirements.
• Providing in-person proactive support to shipyard execution efforts onboard submarines and throughout the shipyard.
• Hands-on troubleshooting to provide timely technical resolutions for execution roadblocks.
• Collaborating with O&RE system engineers as well as interfacing departments to ensure compliance with Shipyard and U.S. Navy procedures.
• Evaluating technical rationale to support the approval of non-conforming conditions.
• Supporting test and certification of systems impacted by the technical work documents.
• Assisting with off-site projects at various Electric Boat and U.S. Navy facilities.
• Developing an understanding of specific non-nuclear areas and systems of a submarine identified in the technical work documents.
