About The Position

The NYCHA Engineer plays a critical role in maintaining and improving the infrastructure of the New York City Housing Authority's residential properties. This position is responsible for ensuring that all engineering systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural components, operate efficiently and comply with safety and regulatory standards. The engineer will lead projects that enhance building performance, sustainability, and resident safety, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and contractors. This role requires proactive problem-solving to address maintenance challenges and implement innovative solutions that support the long-term viability of NYCHA properties. Ultimately, the NYCHA Engineer contributes to creating safe, comfortable, and sustainable living environments for thousands of residents across the city.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in building systems engineering, preferably within public housing or large residential facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and engineering best practices applicable to residential properties.
  • Proficiency in using engineering software and tools for design, analysis, and project management.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, Registered Architect (RA), or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) in the state of New York.
  • Experience working with public housing authorities or government agencies.
  • Familiarity with sustainable building practices and energy-efficient system design.
  • Certification in project management (e.g., PMP) or facility management (e.g., CFM).
  • Knowledge of New York City building codes and local regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections and assessments of building systems to identify maintenance needs and potential improvements.
  • Develop and oversee engineering projects, including renovations, repairs, and upgrades to infrastructure and mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, and city officials to ensure compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, cost estimates, and project documentation to support decision-making and funding requests.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations involving building systems, providing technical expertise to resolve issues efficiently.
