About The Position

The DES Nutrition Technician position at Arlington Community Schools assists the School Nutrition Manager in the efficient operation of the cafeteria. The goal is to prepare and serve nutritious and attractive meals for students and staff in a pleasant environment while maintaining a clean and sanitary work area. This is a 5.5-hour per day position with a ten-month work year.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to work in areas that are often uncomfortable, wet, and slippery.
  • Ability to work in the temperatures found in hot kitchens and walk-in refrigerators and freezers.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to safety procedures and take precautions to avoid cuts, bruises, burns, scalds, and falls.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions in English, both oral and written, to ensure the safety of food preparation and service.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Consistent and prompt attendance is imperative for this role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commercial food service preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties involved in the preparation of food items for student and staff meals, including checking menus, following work schedules, reading and following recipes, assembling ingredients, cooking, serving, and clean up.
  • Prepares bag lunches and snacks for school programs as required.
  • Appears clean, neat, and wears proper attire.
  • Follows written instructions for recipes and production records.
  • Maintains composure and projects a pleasant personality with colleagues, faculty, and students.
  • Monitors and records cooking times and temperatures to ensure thorough heating for consumer safety under HACCP regulations.
  • Sets up serving lines and maintains cleanliness of the serving area, ensuring the availability of necessary serving utensils and serving food in the appropriate quantity per customer.
  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitization of equipment, food preparation and serving areas, and storage areas.
  • Safely handles and stores utensils, pans, serving ware, and cookware.
  • Assists in stocking supplies and monitors inventory, rotating food products as scheduled.
  • May serve as cashier, operating a point-of-sale terminal and collecting monies.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with school, District, and Health Department policies, procedures, and standards of quality and care.
  • Prepares accurate work records as required; may enter and retrieve computer data as needed.
  • Attends training and meetings as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed.
  • Ensures continuous physical exertion required during serving timeframes, e.g., walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward.
