About The Position

Oakland County is seeking a Nutrition Specialist to support the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program. This hybrid, grant-funded position involves working directly with families to provide nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and community referrals. The Nutrition Specialist provides direct nutrition counseling, breastfeeding promotion, and technical health screening services in WIC clinics and community settings, helping individuals and families understand nutrition, access supportive programs, and maintain healthy lifestyles. Key responsibilities include providing nutrition counseling and care plans for eligible WIC families, offering breastfeeding promotion and education, referring participants to appropriate resources, and performing health screenings and minor laboratory tests. The position also involves verifying program eligibility and general office duties.

Requirements

  • An Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in the dietetic technician program with a clinical or community emphasis as approved by the American Dietetic Association; AND Possess registration as a Dietetic Technician with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Foods and Nutrition or Dietetics as approved by the American Dietetic Association.
  • Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.
  • Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.
  • Successfully complete the six month probationary period.
  • Must maintain Dietetic Technician registration.
  • Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator or chauffeur's license.
  • Must submit to immunizations as required by the Department of Health & Human Services and to periodic tuberculin skin tests or chest x-rays at County expense.

Responsibilities

  • Provides nutrition counseling and health screening in normal diet and meal planning for selected populations of County residents in Health Division nutrition programs, clinics, and classes.
  • Conducts nutritional and biometric assessments for selected populations and graphs data.
  • Maintains service records and required reports of activities relative to nutrition programs operated by the Health Division.
  • Refers nutrition program participants to other Health Division, County, or community programs for appropriate services.
  • Assists professional staff in ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of reports and data generated at both the local and central agency level following established procedures.
  • Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
  • Participates in ongoing educational programs to maintain familiarity with current principles and practices of nutrition.
  • Assists in the development, preparation, and implementation of educational programs.
  • Assists in organizing health education materials and audiovisual aids and displays.
  • Drafts selected news releases under the direction of the Health Education section.
