About The Position

The Nutrition Assistant provides high-quality, personalized nutritional care and meal service support for hospitalized patients. This role assists patients with menu selections, ensures meal accuracy and compliance with prescribed diets, supports patient satisfaction, and serves as a key liaison between patients, nursing staff, and nutrition services. The Nutrition Assistant is responsible for upholding departmental and hospital standards while contributing to a positive patient experience and quality nutritional care.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
Healthcare experience involving patient interaction preferred.
Previous customer service experience, including telephone-based customer support, preferred.
Commitment to providing exceptional patient service and adherence to I C.A.R.E. standards.
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to assist patients with menu selections while maintaining a high level of professionalism and empathy.
Ability to manage multiple phone lines and voicemail systems effectively.
Basic computer skills with the ability to learn and use hospital software and technology systems.
Ability to work collaboratively with patients, nursing staff, dietitians, and food service personnel.
Ability to identify and resolve routine service concerns in a timely manner.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to push food carts and perform the physical requirements of the position.
Ability to recognize priorities, work independently, and complete assigned tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

Assist patients with menu selections that align with prescribed diet orders and nutritional restrictions.
Adjust meal selections according to physician, registered dietitian, and nursing instructions.
Ensure patients receive appropriate nourishment at each meal and notify nursing staff of any concerns.
Process meal requests, diet changes, supplements, and enteral nutrition support products according to department procedures.
Complete regular and therapeutic diet menus in accordance with clinical and departmental standards.
Conduct meal rounds and tray assessments to evaluate patient satisfaction and meal accuracy.
Monitor and document calorie counts and nutritional intake as assigned.
Communicate patient concerns, special requests, and nutrition-related issues to clinical and production teams.
Answer department phone lines and respond to requests in a professional and timely manner.
Comply with department standards for meal assembly, delivery, and tray setup.
Assist tray line staff and supervisors with food service operations as needed.
Deliver meal trays to patients when required.
Identify, report, and help resolve patient and service-related concerns.
Attend department meetings, in-service programs, training sessions, and educational activities as assigned.
Uphold and enforce all hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and service standards.
