The Nutrition Assistant obtains patient Room Service selections according to the diet prescription. They answer phone calls, obtain and enter patient meal orders into the CBORD computer system, and verify that meal selections meet diet restrictions, making alternative suggestions when necessary. The role involves phoning nursing units for patients on accuchecks or diabetic diets after they have ordered a meal, and printing orders for tray assembly and delivery or scheduling a print time. Additionally, they enter Behavioral Health paper menu selections into the CBORD system, ensuring all patients receive the correct diet. The Nutrition Assistant demonstrates a commitment to satisfying customer needs and exceeding customer expectations. They process computer diet orders, update the CBORD system, and arrange for trays to be sent as appropriate. Entering supplements, nourishments, allergies, House Trays, Calorie Count, and other information into the computer as ordered is also a key responsibility. They phone the Patient Care Unit when needed to verify unclear diet orders and print House menus and reports at assigned times. The role also includes providing late-night meal service when assigned. This involves assembling patient meal trays in accordance with diet restrictions and delivering them in a timely manner. The Nutrition Assistant works closely with other team members to ensure timely processing and delivery of patient meals and answers all incoming telephone calls from patients and associates. Other clerical duties as assigned include completing the Ongoing Evaluation process for assigned patients, referring nutritionally compromised patients to the Registered Dietitian, providing patient census information to the kitchen, copying nutrition education materials and Room Service paper menus, processing patient charges/credits for supplements, and completing assigned data collection for weekly reports. They also fill printer paper drawers and labels, empty trash, and assist with other duties such as assembling silverware and putting stickers on cafeteria containers. Filling floorstock orders as assigned, obtaining needed food or supply items, assembling orders, and placing them in designated coolers until delivery are also part of the role. The Nutrition Assistant practices effective communication by scheduling outpatient nutrition counseling appointments, making reminder calls, ensuring patient satisfaction, routing orders for consults and new enteral nutrition orders to the Registered Dietitian, and handling messages appropriately. They keep supervisors informed, communicate with nursing units to clarify nutrition care orders, and phone the PCA once accucheck/diabetic patients order. Performance of all department activities must be in accordance with the department’s standards, policies and procedures, as well as with Accrediting Organization and local Health Department Regulations. This includes presenting a neat and clean appearance, observing safety regulations, participating in meetings and inservices, maintaining an organized work area, adhering to safety and security guidelines, and actively participating in the department's Performance Improvement Plan and initiatives. Collaboration with hospital, department, and fellow associates to exceed customer expectations and following the Standards of Behavior of the hospital are also expected.
