About The Position

The Nutrition Assistant supports WIC Nutritionists and the Nutrition Coordinator in implementing and promoting nutrition education activities in the WIC Program. The role supports nutrition staff by gathering information for nutrition assessments and obtaining anthropometric and hematological data, as trained. The Nutrition Assistant functions as a WIC Associate in day-to-day operations, rotates to satellite locations to provide WIC services, and performs WIC Associate duties as required. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma required.
• One year of experience working with children and families.
• Computer skills required.
• Excellent telephone manner.
• Basic computer skills.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
• Ability to work with a diverse public.
• Availability to work on weekends.
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Nice To Haves

• Post-high-school education preferred.
• Knowledge of NYWIC preferred.
• Bilingual ability in Spanish, French, or Creole is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinic and office support to the Qualified Nutritionist.
• Collect information for the nutrition assessment process, including obtaining anthropometric and hematological data, as trained.
• Participate in breastfeeding promotion and support.
• Issue food packages that do not require medical documentation after they have been prescribed by the Qualified Nutritionist.
• Provide referrals to health and social services and document follow-up.
• Identify participants who should be referred to a Qualified Nutritionist and make those referrals.
• Assist the Qualified Nutritionist in planning and evaluating participant-centered nutrition education, such as food demonstrations and healthy-lifestyle activities.
• Support day-to-day WIC operations and rotate to satellite locations to provide WIC services.
• Perform WIC Associate duties as required.
