About The Position

The Nutrition Aide will explain the basic concepts of the WIC Program to participants, maintain knowledge of supplemental food packages, benefit issuance procedures, and the WIC foods list. This role performs all functions of the program not requiring certification, including preparing and issuing food instruments, anthropometrics, evaluating incomes, hematological testing, and referrals. The aide will utilize the PA Department of Health computer system (PENN) for data processing and adhere to local and state agency policies. Responsibilities include preparing charts for WIC clinics, providing basic and secondary nutrition education under the direction of the Nutrition Education Coordinator, scheduling appointments, and safeguarding participant files. The role also involves collecting information for the Client Access Tracking System (CATS), attending and assisting in outreach events, reviewing health/nutrition publications, maintaining a customer-friendly attitude, managing participant flow, providing feedback to the office manager, and completing quarterly time studies. Additional duties include attending meetings, participating in training and outreach events, performing overnight travel, driving a WIC vehicle, working at all WIC clinic sites, acting as a mandated child abuse/neglect reporter, and following program confidentiality procedures. The aide must also maintain a sanitary work environment according to the WIC Program’s Continuity of Operations Plan during a pandemic or disaster.

Requirements

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills for data input.
  • Able to weigh and measure (read a ruler and scale)
  • Excellent customer support.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to identify the needs of the program and of the participant.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical procedures, such as computing family income.
  • Ability to work independently or in conjunction with other support staff.
  • Good organization, filing, and general work skills.
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma.
  • Minimum of six month’s experience in public contact field.
  • Current Pennsylvania Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
  • Free of Child Abuse/Neglect history as verified by proper authorities.
  • Must obtain FBI Fingerprinting and PA State Police Background Check Clearances prior to starting employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Six month’s previous experience in nutrition or have completed and passed an approved college course in nutrition or dietetics

Responsibilities

  • Prepares charts for WIC clinics on a daily basis.
  • Provides basic and secondary nutrition education to participants during food benefit distribution under the direction of the Nutrition Education Coordinator.
  • Schedules appointments and utilizes the PENN scheduler.
  • Responsible for safeguarding and maintaining participant files.
  • Responsible for collecting information for CATS – Client Access Tracking System
  • Attends and assists in the preparation of outreach events.
  • Reviews and/or completes current health/nutrition publications and/or self-studies provided by the Nutrition Education Coordinator.
  • Responsible for providing customer friendly attitude while on the work site or at outreach events.
  • Responsible for maintaining participant flow within established time frames as designated by clinic schedules.
  • Responsible for providing feedback to the office manager regarding clinic schedules, client flow, and clinic operation.
  • Completes quarterly time studies.
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Participates in required job-related training and outreach events.
  • Performs overnight travel as required.
  • Safely drives WIC vehicle.
  • Required to work all WIC clinic sites.
  • Mandated child abuse/neglect reporter
  • Follows the program procedures relating to confidentiality.
