Apply Online by May 1, 2026.  Position Purpose: In this valuable role, the Nursing Supervisor provides leadership to part-time Health & Wellness Staff delivering both occupational and non-occupational nursing services, including advanced first aid services for both our team and guests. This position also leads staff occupational health services, ensuring a high standard of care, safety, and service for all employees, including support for disability case management. The role partners with leaders to address trends and risks proactively rather than reactively and analyzes data to inform decisions that promote both occupational and non-occupational health, safety, and well-being across the organization. As a supervisor, the role contributes to and helps implement the Strategic Plan, aligning health and wellness initiatives with broader organizational priorities.

Requirements

  • Must have a professional designation Registered Nursing Certification valid and in good standing in the Province of Ontario
  • Must have 3-5 years progressive related experience in occupational health, including 1 year demonstrated experience providing leadership.
  • Must have current Standard First Aid & CPR certification.
  • Must have a proven record of being able to exercise discretion in the handling of confidential matters.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to lead and supervise.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, including Microsoft Office 365.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
  • Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays.
  • Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Must have basic knowledge of budget preparation and administration.
  • Capable of meeting the physical demands of the position.
  • Awareness of infectious contagious disease and prevention strategies (including Zoonotic).

Responsibilities

  • Provides supervision to Health and Wellness staff and ensures direct reports are working within their scope of practice, adhering to safe work practices and following all applicable Zoo policies, applicable legislation and College of Nurses (CNO) standards and best practice guidelines.
  • Provides emergency first aid care as required to guests, staff and volunteers and contractors.
  • Ensures adequate supply of the Health and Wellness centre, including equipment maintenance for all First Aid services.
  • Under the direction of the Zoo’s medical advisors provides occupational health services including but not limited to: medical monitoring programs including but not limited to Anti-Rabies Screening and Vaccination program, TB Screening Program, administration of seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • Dispenses non-prescription medications for general ailments.
  • Provides emergency medical care under the direction Zoo’s Emergency Medica Advisors.
  • Provided advice, health teaching and information regarding injury and/or illness.
  • Works with employees, management, human resources and as applicable, union representatives in developing, implementation and evaluation of accommodation plans and disability management for work/non-work-related injury/illness.
  • Seeks consultation from the Zoo’s Occupational Medical Advisor as needed for above.
  • Provide regular updates and informs on status of claims.
  • Monitors data and evaluates for trends on related to workplace illness and/or injury and takes appropriate action.
  • For occupational claims reports to and liaises with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
  • Follows best practice guidelines and standards for the administration of occupational health and safety programs and initiatives.
  • Applies best practices regarding general health information, disease prevention and health and wellbeing promotion, within an Occupational setting.
  • Ensures teams are informed and identifies mechanisms to track illness, prevent spread and mitigate risks (example Zoonotic disease).
  • Develops and supports initiatives and programs that support proactive health promotion and injury prevention.
  • Ability to create and provide training for staff on various health related topics including ergonomics, back and muscular care, hygiene practices and risk reduction measures.
  • Gathers and maintains statistics related to the Health and Wellness Centre and services.
  • Assists persons using Family Centre facilities and tracks utilization.
  • Orders and maintains all necessary first aid supplies materials and equipment to provide first aid response and treatment.
  • Prepares monthly reports on incidents of illness/injury and other data regarding the operation of the Health and Wellness Centre and forwards same to the Manager of Health & Safety Services. Maintains an ongoing record of all work-related injuries and advises the Manager, Health & Safety of developing trends or safety hazards identified from medical documentation.
  • Provides advice/counsel to individual employees about any health concerns/matters on a personal or confidential nature and provides advice on access to external supports and resources as required.
  • Ensures that all first aid kits and medical equipment on site are stocked and maintained. As per WSIB Regulation 1101.
  • Actively participates in various committees, including Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee, Wellness Committee and Guest Safety Committee as required.
  • Conducts respiratory fit testing.
  • Supervises lost children in the Health & Wellness Centre when required and, maintains records regarding same.
