About The Position

This position is for a Nursing Supervisor in the Medical/Surgical Unit at Osborn Medical Center. The role involves supervising, assessing, planning, coordinating, facilitating, and evaluating patient care and staff development. The supervisor will determine and maintain unit or program needs and standards, using the nursing process and evidence-based information. They will also assume responsibility and accountability for incorporating the organization's vision, values, mission, and critical goals into their job performance. Additionally, the supervisor will assist the Clinical Director in managing the unit's assigned staff and patient population, and provide direct patient care as needed. Specific knowledge of stroke symptoms, warning signs, protocols, NIHSS, Stroke Alert activation, quality indicators, patient education materials, community resources, and website resources is required for RNs directly caring for stroke patients.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN, BScN) from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution
  • Legally licensed to work as a registered nurse in the State of Arizona
  • 2 years Registered Nurse (RN) - Required
  • Clinical Other/BCLS - Basic Life Support BLS Healthcare Provider Training Course - Required
  • Must obtain a certification in their respective area of expertise within 1 year of hire or promotion date for magnet standards - Required
  • Nursing/RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure State Licensure - Required

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, assesses, plans, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates patient care and staff development.
  • Determines and maintains unit or program needs and standards using the nursing process and evidence-based information.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the vision, values, mission, and critical goals of the organization into job performance.
  • Assists the Clinical Director in the management of the unit's assigned staff and patient population.
  • Provides direct patient care according to the needs of the unit/program and collaborates with physicians in executing the medical plan of care.
  • Oversees staff and ensures adequate patient care, including hiring/onboarding, evaluating, managing performance, coaching, and developing employees.
  • Ensures employee productivity, quality of work, and alignment of goals with the organization's mission, vision, and values.
  • Establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, including administering medication, checking dosages, avoiding interactions, starting/maintaining/discontinuing IV lines, administering therapies and treatments, observing and recording patient status, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.
  • Ensures compliance with all policies and financial stewardship by being accountable for the financial integrity of the department budget.
  • Serves as a resource to staff, patients, families, caregivers, physicians, and visitors to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes, and promote a healthy work environment.
  • Teaches patients and families about illness/injury management, post-treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self-administration of medication and therapy.
  • Facilitates inter/intra departmental collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Participates in policy revisions and committees applicable to the department.
  • Participates in the creation, implementation, and follow-up of unit goals and action planning.
  • Contributes to staff recruitment and retention through positive role-modeling, fostering peer relationships, staff education, and participating in preceptor and/or mentor programs.
  • Coordinates educational and professional activities related to department/unit needs.
  • Regularly rounds with physicians, patients, or families to facilitate quality practice and improve the patient experience.
  • Utilizes the nursing process and evidence-based practice to provide patient care and evaluate the patient’s plan of care.
  • Initiates and supports quality improvement initiatives and utilizes resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Directs staff in the application of the nursing process.
  • Provides direction, coordinates patient care, and promotes/enhances independent functioning among employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
