About The Position

Fairview is looking for a Nursing Station Technician on the Med/Surg Neurology Unit at St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, MN. This role is a .7 FTE (56 hours every 2 weeks) working 8-hour evening shifts, with every other weekend rotation. Variable weekday schedule. We are committed to delivering outstanding health care in our growing community! Our 184-bed facility offers a wide range of diagnostic & therapeutic services. There are 31 beds on this unit which sees a little bit of everything. We see on average about 30 patients a day and turn half of their beds within a day. On the Med/Surg side, they are a medical tele unit, and they support a variety of surgeries and also specialty surgeries including bowel resections, amputations, and complex wound care. On the Neuro/Tele side they provide care to patients that have had a transient ischemic attack (TIA), stroke, confusion, seizures and VP shunt placement.

Requirements

  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Station Tech job
  • Current enrollment in an RN program, and completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross)

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and / or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, reordering, and stocking supplies.
  • Performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of patient care unit desk area functions.
  • Coordinating the flow of communication on a patient care unit.
  • Facilitating timely flow of communication on the patient care area to ensure the exchange of information and to promote the coordination of services.
  • Promptly answering the telephone identifying self and patient care area, asks questions to clarify information, and consistently follows through on all messages in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Coordinating activities of the desk area to provide prompt, accurate and courteous handling of communication.
  • Consistently answering patient intercom promptly and relays patient requests in a timely manner.
  • Providing effective customer service by interacting with other health care team members, patients, and public to foster cooperation and accurate exchange of communication in a friendly, cooperative, and timely manner always.
  • Coordinating the scheduling of tests, lab work, and other patient and department procedures, arranging appropriate transport, and assisting with transport.
  • Effectively using EHR.
  • Identifying and facilitating resolution of unit specific issues between patient care area and support departments (e.g. Materials Management, Linen Services, HIM (Medical Records), Nutrition Services, Environmental Services) involving Nurse Manager / Manager as needed.
  • Responsible for the completion of clerical duties in an organized and priority-based manner.
  • Assembling admission charts and maintaining patient charts according to sites guidelines and policies.
  • Utilizing processes to obtain necessary paperwork for chart and/or orders.
  • Adding and deleting reports and forms following correct chart order.
  • Facilitating corrections in EHR when delegated by RN and/or MD.
  • Preparing charts for discharge and transfers.
  • Following current processes for next level of care communication.
  • Preparing and completing necessary informational sources for specific care area (e.g. census information, computer information, etc.).
  • Assigning and maintaining unit communication technology.
  • Completing other required duties as delegated in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Responsible for the accurate, timely transcription of physician’s orders.
  • Following the essential steps for timely and accurate transcription of physician’s orders as required by recognizing and order needing transcription, ordering necessary services, tests, equipment, and signing off order per procedure.
  • Demonstrating familiarity with medical terminology and abbreviations and utilizes proper abbreviations and symbols per procedures.
  • Demonstrating organizational skills by transcribing physician orders based on priorities and by following a systematic routine.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of desk area and patient supplies and equipment according to designated standards.
  • Ordering individual patient supplies as directed by a nurse or as indicated in physician orders.
  • Notifying appropriate department per procedure for equipment requiring maintenance and follows through on status of equipment as necessary.
  • Demonstrating general knowledge of cost containment and awareness of cost control by following designated standards of the patient care area.
  • Maintaining safe, clean, and efficient patient care areas.
  • Participating in orientation of new staff (e.g. Nursing staff, physicians, and students) on the patient care unit.
  • Demonstrating and sharing knowledge of priority-based job responsibilities in an organized manner.
  • Demonstrating and sharing knowledge of policies specific to sites to include patient confidentiality; safety / emergency procedures; infection control.
  • Providing basic patient care by performing routine duties to include: personal grooming, bathing, toileting, feeding, skin care needs (clean and sterile dressing changes), applying ointments / creams; oral hygiene; specimen collection / testing; position / ambulating; changing linens, and promptly answers call lights.
  • Assuring patient privacy and safety.
  • Assisting nurses in monitoring patient condition.
  • Accurately taking and recording data points to include weights, input / output, blood pressure, temperatures, pulse rates, respiration; oxygen saturation, BG, placing patients on / off monitors or equipment.
  • Reporting unusual findings to the RN in a timely manner.
  • Assisting with admissions, transfers and discharge of patients including orienting patient / family to environment, assuring that patient’s belongings are accounted for at destination.
  • Transporting patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
  • Cleaning, setting up, and maintaining rooms and equipment.
  • Documenting tasks and cares per standards.
  • Completing orientation process and evaluation checklist of skills objectively and in a timely manner as assigned.
