About The Position

Under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nursing Director is responsible for planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating nursing care for assigned Perinatal Services units. This role involves coordinating patient services, fostering a learning environment, developing and evaluating staff, and acting as a patient advocate. The Nursing Director is accountable 24/7 for managing all aspects of nursing activities within the assigned unit(s), ensuring that nursing care meets legal, ethical, institutional, and professional standards. They also participate in the Hospital’s Quality Improvement and Service Excellence programs and interpret/facilitate the implementation of organizational philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures. The position ensures the integration of the department into the organization's primary functions, creates a collaborative work environment, monitors patient care from admission to discharge, and collaborates with the Medical Director of Perinatal units (L&D, Post-Partum, Nursery & NICU Level I). Responsibilities include rounding on patients, investigating incidents and complaints, ensuring regulatory compliance, developing policies and procedures, planning and providing adequate staffing, establishing work schedules, ensuring employee records are complete, coordinating orientation and continuing education, participating in quality improvement processes, maintaining quality control programs, participating in budget planning, providing 24-hour leadership accountability, functioning in a staff role as needed, demonstrating adaptability and professionalism, participating in continuous Quality Improvement programs, abiding by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct, maintaining patient confidentiality, and ensuring a safe work environment.

Requirements

Graduate of a school of professional nursing.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas, or immediately eligible.
Basic Life Support certification required within 30 days of employment.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support & Neonatal Resuscitation certifications within 90 days of employment.
Frequent: standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling & reaching.
Occasional: sitting, bending, squatting, climbing kneeling, twisting.
Visual and hearing acuity required; Color vision required for perceiving changes in patients’ skin color and colors of medicines and solutions.
Work is inside, with good ventilation and comfortable temperature.
Possible exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, radiant energy, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens.

Nice To Haves

BSN preferred.
Two years of Charge RN experience.
Prior Nurse Manager experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Plans, implements, directs, and evaluates nursing care for assigned units for Perinatal Services.
Coordinates the delivery of patient services.
Creates and maintains an environment conducive to learning.
Provides for the development and evaluation of staff.
Serves as a patient advocate within the health care system.
Accountable on a twenty-four (24) hour basis for the management of all facets of nursing activities for assigned unit(s).
Assures that nursing care meets legal, ethical, institutional, and professional standards.
Participates in the Hospital’s Quality Improvement and Service Excellence programs.
Interprets and facilitates the application and implementation of the philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures of the department and organization.
Ensures integration of the department(s) into the primary functions of the organization.
Creates a collaborative, productive work environment through positive relationships with senior leadership, other directors, physicians, employees, patients/families and the community.
Monitors the provision of patient care for all assigned services from admission through discharge.
Collaborates with the Medical Director of assigned units: Perinatal (L&D, Post-Partum, Nursey & NICU Level I).
Rounds on patients.
Investigates incidents and patient complaints, performing service recovery when possible.
Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Develops and implements appropriate policies and procedures.
Plans and provides a sufficient number of qualified and competent staff for the unit.
Establishes work schedules and assignments to ensure coverage as demonstrated by maintaining appropriate staff ratios within approved budgetary guidelines while ensuring safe, quality patient care.
Ensures completion of all employee records including but not limited to: payroll, performance evaluations, competencies, personnel action requests etc.
Ensures initial orientation and continuing education opportunities are presented appropriately for all department staff.
Coordinates and participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement processes for the nursing unit.
Maintains quality control programs, as appropriate.
Participates in the budget planning process by making recommendations for resources, including personnel, equipment and space as appropriate.
Provides 24 hour accountability of leadership by appropriate delegation, using sound decision making and critical thinking skills.
Functions competently in the staff role as necessary.
Demonstrates adaptability, problem solving and professional behavior at all times.
Participates in continuous Quality Improvement programs.
Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.
Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
