Duke University Hospital is seeking a Nursing Care Assistant I for the 8 East unit, a 24-bed unit with 9 PCU beds. This unit cares for a diverse patient population including COVID/Respiratory with continuous Bipap and Optiflow, Trauma, Transplant, Neuro, Cardiac, OB, and Oncology, GIP Hospice team. Wound Care, Med-Psych, and GI patients are also treated here. The Nursing Assistant (NA) functions as a patient care support partner to the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), performing delegated tasks. The NA provides direct patient care and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. This role requires knowledge of basic care and comfort standards, as well as understanding the needs of the patient population in the assigned work area. The NA will assist the RN/LPN in caring for acutely ill patients, practicing medical asepsis, respecting patient and family dignity and privacy, and acknowledging cultural differences. Adherence to policies, procedures, and appropriate response during emergencies are expected. Responsibilities include maintaining the patient/family environment, general unit upkeep, ordering and maintaining equipment, and ordering supplies as needed. Accurate verbal and written communication, including documentation in the electronic health record, is essential.
